Just wanted to share something with you that was so much fun. Now that I am down 165 lbs, I decided to change my workout rountine. Since I am not allowed to do my light jogging on the treadmill because of my arthritic knees, I do the recumbent bike now for 40 minutes instead. Clocked about 14.5 miles in 40 minutes. Felt really good, too! Anyway, I passed by a roller skating rink yesterday and stopped to get some info. Went in today and tried it out. It was a blast! Even the part where I fell on my butt after being on the skates for about 30 seconds. I think, for me anyway, after I get a fall or two out of the way, I don't fear falling down any more. I had such a good time and got a great workout. Little hint to those that might want to try this. . . don't do the inline skates at first, go for the traditional 4-wheeled skates. Work up to the inline ones if that is what you want. I can never do inline skates because of an ankle injury in high school, but I'm telling you even the traditional ones are a blast once you get your balance. Feel free to hang onto the wall at first. While I was there, a little girl about 7 or 8 years old passed me by after I was feeling more coordinated and complimented me on my progress. "You are really doing good now!" (Big huge goofy grin on my face now just remembering it.) Another little kid about 10 or 11 gave me some tips on the differences between the kinds of skates and wheels. I didn't have the heart to tell him I wasn't going to ever do inline skates. Anyway, if you are feeling like doing something that gives a great workout and is just plain fun, I highly recommend roller skating!

Sounds like a blast! But I'm still (in my head) afraid of really hurting something if I fall....probably would be fine, but I still feel like I would fall really really hard! Dina

I hear you, Dina! I'm actually more afraid falling might hurt worse now that I'm less cushioned! I'm trying to improve my coordination, too, because my golf swing and bowling approach are both thrown off now because my center of gravity has changed. Great problems to have! But I would love to roller skate, I just don't have any rinks close by.

I hear you guys! I was concerned about it too as I am in therapy for the knees, but a tip told to me by the physical therapist was to not go so fast and to fall on your butt as much as possible. It is, after all, the most padded part of your anatomy!!

You know, it's funny you mention the thing about your center of gravity changing. That is exactly the sensation I had the first 4 or 5 times around the rink. It was very weird for me. I haven't felt that uncoordinated in a very long time!
