Good morning, all. I am embarrassed to post this and thought that I wouldn't find the courage to do so and then remembered that this is what we're here for...each other. Yesterday, I went to a formal lunch at the college where I work. Did fine at first, had just a few swallows of the soup (lobster bisque), ate a few forkfulls of the beef, left the rice alone, stabbed at a few veggies, mostly grilled peppers...then before I could say "no thanks" the dessert was put in front of me...key lime pie with a rich graham cracker crust. I dived right in, didn't stop to consider it for a moment. Before I knew what was happening, it was gone. Look, Mom, I belong to the clean plate club. My pouch (if that's what it is any longer) had no problems with it. No sickness, just a little quickening of the pulse and some minor shaking, probably from an extreme sugar high. Here's the thing. I don't even really like key lime pie. But yesterday, I couldn't get enough of it or eat it fast enough. Seems like old times. Help anyone??? This has really scared me. Thanks. Maureen

Reenie, There have been a few times when after throwing up my dinner at a restaurant (this is a frequent occurrence with my stricture and other assorted issues) that I will order key lime pie and it is the only thing that will stay down. It really doesn't sound like you ate much of your lunch at all. I wouldn't be beating myself up over the pie. I personally have so many issues with the food, that I consider that I will eat anything that will stay down and not make me sick!!!

Been there done that. Suggestion for both of us: Next time, eat more of your soup, beef, and veges!!! Our appetites are returning. We can't expect to stay on the small quantities that we lived on months ago. We just need to satisfy ourselves with plenty of protein and vitamin-rich food first. Then, worst case, a bite of dessert is all that we will even want! My weakness is the bread they serve--why do they always bring it at the beginning, when I am hungriest??? Joy

Joy, Fortunately for me I cannot tolerate the bread. If I even have the smallest amount my meal is going to come back up and I am going to be miserable for sure. I am having a lot of problems with not being able to eat any quantity. My doctor is very concerned that I am not eating enough. I was able to eat more in June/July than I have been able to in the last 3 months. I go back December 9 for my 3rd endoscopy and dilation. If this continues, I will have to go back into surgery for a revision, so I am hoping that I get to eating the way he thinks I should be able to eat soon.

1) You ate soup during the meal thus washing the food out and making more room for the pie. 2) Key lime pie is essentially like a firmer version of yogurt in texture and the crust is like crackers...disintigrates when chewed. What you ate was pretty much volume-wise like a container of yogurt with a graham cracker. 3) You aren't a bottomless pit when dealing with pie. You ate, you got a little rush from the sugar and you will go on. So you ate one piece. Know what I had yesterday? I had pumpkin cheesecake. Yes it was a small sliver, and I did eat it in 2 servings, but ONLY because I knew it would make me dump. But that little piece of pumpkin cheesecake was probably twice the calories of your slice of key lime. Don't sweat it so much. We are going to go on and live our lives. For me, my family was all here and the cir****tances called for it. For you, you were in a position where you were out of your element. You were at a formal lunch where they put the food in front of your face. This isn't like when you eat your lunch every day. The fact that you are sweating it is indication enough that you will be fine. Believe that, my friend! Dina

Hi Maureen; I'm quite sure that everyone on this board has made a few slip-ups like this along the way. I CERTAINLY HAVE!!!!!!! The thing that you must keep in mind is that the calories consumed in one piece of pie is really miniscule. It takes several thousand calories to put on one pound!! One piece of key lime pie is what?....maybe 300-400 calories tops??!! You just need to get back on the wagon and stop beating yourself up over this. In the greater scheme of things, IT MEANS NOTHING!!!! I don't know about you, but in the bad old days, if I did something like eat the pie, I would figure: " Oh well...... I blew the diet now....MIGHT AS WELL EAT!!!! We really have to lose that mindset if we're going to make this work. Even though it seems so easy, it really takes a lot of work to put on weight in the quantities we did, so the occasional slip-up won't matter unless we make it matter by making it habit again. O.K., end or sermon, someone else get up on the soap box!!! Keep the faith, you're doing great! Mike

Its shocking when we eat things all up on our plates now isnt it? Yesterday, for the very first time I ate a meatball sandwhich!!! the whole thing!!! I was shocked. It took me a little longer to eat about 45 min but shoot I ate the darn thing! I can eat desert like its nothing. Sometimes I get sick sometimes I dont (not that I am always eating desert mind you! ) mmmm.... key lime pie sounds so yummy! Dont worry too much about it. It just points out to us that we have to be much more careful now. It definitely IS scary! very scary but we just have to go to the support groups and keep ourselves in check! AND I am WAY past due for a kick in the rear and a check! Elizabeth M

Reenie, This couldn't have been like old times because you only had one piece. If it were my old times, I would have eaten mine, the guy's next to me and still been licking crumbs off of everyone else's plate as the waiter cleared the table. I hope you enjoyed the hell out of that pie. I hope it rolled across your palate and caressed your mouth with creaminess. You deserve to enjoy yourself and now that you have, just get back on track. Forget about it and move on. Love ya, Connie

Maureen, You are not alone, trust me I have eaten the last week like I never even had the surgery. I scare myself, I was at a babyshower Friday and had a piece of cheese cake and it was great, didnt bother me a bit, I wish I would have threw up the whole thing and then I would be afraid to eat sweets again, but guess what it doesnt happen to me I do not dump and wish I did. Good Luck to you and just know we have all done the same thing. Rhen
