Answer me this...
We are told NOT to drink liquids some time (varies) before or after we eat- because this will "wash away" the food before our system has a chance to process and absorb the nutrients...
So then if we eat something we shouldn't have (high-carb, sugary, etc.) we should be able to flu**** from our system by drinking water immediately... correct?
Interested to hear comments on this...
::hanging head in shame:: I can answer this from prior experience. When you eat something sugary/carby and drink afterward, if you are a dumper, you can then expect to dump whereas if you hadn't it might have sat in the pouch long enough to digest some of the sugars.
It won't keep you from absorbing the calories though, if that was the point you were trying to ask...

Robert,
I've had eperiences where eating something not necessarily high carb or sugar has made me feel like I wanted to die. It seems to me that following it up with water helps the feeling pass more quickly. I don't know whether or not I'm absorbing the nutrients, but I know that I feel better. I don't like to "flush" my system though because I seem to get hungry sooner.

I have found that if I drink too soon after eating, I am more likely to have a throwing up incident and with the recurring stricture, I don't need to do anything to add to the barfing.
The other issue with drinking either before/after is that you fill your pouch (sort of like the old days when they told us to drink a glass of water prior to a meal so as not to be as hungry) and you don't have room for your meal.
Also if you drink with your meal you flush the food out and prevent the full feeling. That is how, when I was at the height of my obesity, I could have three large glasses of soda and eat an appetizer, my whole dinner, AND desert. My stomach must have been the size of a football.
I won't drink during meals now, and I'll wait the half hour after at least before I drink again. I think in 8 months I've drank with maybe four or five meals.

At least from my dietitian's point of view, it's not that it washes through you system...it's that it washes out of your pouch. If you eat soft or liquid foods or drink while eating, your pouch won't stay full as long.
The liquid won't flu**** through your intestines any faster. What's down there will still absorb however normally you do absorb now.

Your thinking is exactly the same kind of reasoning I came to also, but alas it doesn't seem to work. I had an incident at the convention where I ate one stuffed mushroom too many, and it felt stuck and uncomfortable...after confering with a friend I took a couple sips of water to see if it would feel better, but it was worse. I ended up up-chucking the problem....and felt better in about an hour. But I know your thoughts sound logical.
