Hi! I had posted a while back about having abd pain. Saw surgeon (or rather, HE saw me!) Was on Protonix (sp?) 3 days, which I stopped taking as it caused diarrhea. Had gastroscopy, which showed no trace of ulcer or inflammation. Pain had already eased by the time i got in to have gastroscopy (due to the protonix, I guess). Dr did say I still had hiatal hernia, which surprised me slightly as that was supposed to be REPAIRED during the RNY I had 3/30/04. Any of you have a hiatal hernia "return"? ANyway, I am not that worried about it...just curious to see if others have had it. Mainly, I am just RELIEVED and HAPPY to be feeling much better! Thanks for the responses and support from my last post, they were a blessing! ellen ps Yesterday was my 5 month anniversary...done nearly 70 pounds!!

Ellen, Yesterday was my 5 month anniversary, too. I had a hiatal hernia before surgery and I guess I still have it. I have pain sometime in my stomach, just like I did before surgery. It usually doesn't last long and I have not talked to my doctor about it. I go in two weeks to my pcp and then the next 2 weeks I go to my surgeon, so I'll ask them then about the pain. I'm glad you're feeling better. Judy

for the response Judy! It was reassuring to know that I am not the only one with a hiatal hernia. My hernia was so large that it was gurgling loudly in my chest whenever I laid down....my family dr actually thought I had pneumonia. Had a CXR and found out it wasn't pneumonia, it was a "huge" HH. Since my RNY, I havnen't had the HH "gurgling" in my chest anymore, so I am assuming the surgeon at least reduced the hernia. I"m sorry you still have some pain with yours...will be anxious to hear what your dr has to say about that. Glad to know another "Marcher"!

Ellen - A couple of thoughts here.... I have a hiatal hernia as well, but it wasn't as severe as yours. I was told that the issues would self resolve after the surgery, but they didn't say it would fix the hernia. It would just not be aggrivated as it had been before. If you had surgical repair, the other thought is that I have been told that it can re-herniate especially on those who have had the lap band (that is why they wouldn't do it on me). If that is the case, I would think that there is a chance for it to always have a weak spot even after RNY. I would think it shouldn't be as bad as before though. Hopefully it won't cause you any real problems.... Dina

makes sense Dina..thanks for the insight! I don't suppose it is such a bad thing to have a hiatal hernia. Especially since I don't have any of the symptoms (heartburn, reflux) that I had BEFORE my RNY. I am going to check with the surgeon at my Sept visit, see what he has to say. I'll let ya'll know! Thanks for the post!!!
