Improved eyesight after WLS?

My vision was not SUPER poor prior to the weight loss, but I did need my contacts/glasses to see. I was -1.75 in the left eye and a -2.0 in the right eye. I have had my vision checked twice in the last 2 weeks with the exact same results. Left eye is now a -0.50 and the right eye is a -0.75. I can pass for 20/20 vision although the 20/20 line is fuzzy. A little squinting and I can make out the letters. I was nearsighted prior to all of my weight gain -- so I know that being morbidly obese did not cause the poor vision -- so how could weight loss improve my vision? Maybe it's just a fluke? A fluke I will gladly accept! Maybe this is related to WLS or maybe it is not. It could be possible that my nearsightedness spontaneously improved itself and it just so happened to coincide with my weight loss. Who knows?!?! Both Dr's who gave me the exams said that nearsightedness -never- corrects itself unless there are certain changes like diabetes and pregnancy. I did not have diabetes and I have not been pregnant. The Dr's were just as amazed at this improvement as I am. In fact, the tech that administered the computerized eye exam asked me if I had my contacts on because the readings from the machine were soo different from my eye exam last year. LOL! Anyway --- what I would be interested in finding out is whether or not anyone else has experienced this type of change after losing his/her weight? Thanks! Nancy Lap RNY 3/22/04 250/167/150

Whoa, Nancy - almost to your goal! Congrats!! I wish I could agree with you on the eyesight deal; mine seems to be getting worse - not better. L Y N N 298/203/150

Even though you didn't have diabetes, I wonder if it's from eating less sugars some how? CP

I have never heard of this before, but you did mention diabetes and pregnancy and it makes me wonder if you had some chronic water retention that you got rid of with the weight. I know you mention on your profile that you have PCOS which is an insulin disorder, so perhaps you had enough of that to make a difference. Maybe you were pre-diabetic. That and the weight loss does cause hormonal changes which could explain for why sometimes vision changes in pregnancy. It seems to me that it might not be so weird after all. I just hope that it sticks for you - that is really cool! I would love to ditch my contacts!!! Dina
