Gallbladder problems already...

I am just over 4 months out... and have been having this severe pinching pain right under my rib cage on the right side. It's come and gone for about 2 weeks. I kept telling myself it was gas or something. The pain really kicked into high gear this week and I ended up in my surgeon's office this morning... He wants to take my gallbladder out this next Wednesday. WOW. That soon? Anyway -- I am going to the hospital tomorrow morning for an ultrasound and if negative, I will have a HIDA scan on Monday morning. Anyone else have gallbladder problems this quick? Any issues after having the galbladder removed? Nancy Lap RNY 3/22/04 250/173/150

hi--my surgeon took my gallbladder out at the same time as my wls---this is his ususal procedure because he feels you will eventually have to have it removed--i didn't notice any pain where the gall bladder was--so it won't be so bad--best wishes

Hi Nancy, My gallbladder came out the same time as my surgery as is also my doctor's practice. I had a very similar pain to what you described within the first month to 6 weeks after my surgery, and I thought of is as 'imaginary' gall bladder pain. The doctor said he didn't know what it was, but everyone at group seemed to have gone through the same thing. Of course, at almost 4 1/2 months out it probably is something more serious. Good luck Hugs, Mo

Hi Nancy: My surgeon did not remove my gallbaldder but did put me on Actigall (ursodiol). A medication to help prevent gallstones. Were you on it? I am to take it twice a day for 6 months. Thanks. Good luck with your surgery. You should be fine. Louise 231/162/150

I had my gallbladder out five years ago, so mine was already gone when I had my surgery. I had some major complications with my gb surgery, but it was because of an incompetent doctor. If you have a good surgeon, you should be fine. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't savvy enough at my young age (at the time!) to research my surgeon, and just blindly trusted that if he was licensed, he must be good at it. Wrong!!! Anyway, other than that, the only effect that I have from a missing gallbladder is that I have more loose stools that normal, and when I gotta go, I REALLY gotta go! LOL. Tammy 373/292/160 -81 lbs.

My doc removed my Gb. also when he did my wls, but he will only remove it if a stone is present! I also had the same pains that Mo described but the doctor said it was from the stitches that he put in to close the space where he removed the Gb. the pain came n went in about 5 weeks p/o. I do notice when I walk to much I have a Phantom pain in the area though, but it doesnt last long. I wish you the best, God bless you and keep you safe hugz Mary

Hi Nancy -- I had my gallbladder removed 7 years ago after my first son was born. I have had NO issues with fats or anything since then and I can tell you - having it out is soooo much easier than you think. For me it was outpatient - I was in and out in about 5 hours and had three tiny incisions from the laproscopic procedure but I felt so much better immediately. The attacks that I was having were so severe I was afraid to eat anything. Immediately after the surgery I had to eat a dry piece of toast before I could go home and I cried I was so afraid of eating...but it was all fine . You'll do great! Lissa

Well, from what I have read, it is very very common even this soon out. I don't know what the reasons would be, but some surgeons choose to leave them in when they do the surgery. I kind of think they should just be proactive and get rid of it, but who knows the benefit to keeping a good one though too. Dina
