Marilyn, the Bearlady
Hi Marilyn,
I have been gone this weekend and just saw your posts. I have some perhaps reassuring news! My mother (78) was taken to the hospital with suspected dehydration, too. She was off her rocker! I thought she had "caught" Alzheimers overnight! It was terrible. I asked the doctor if I should bring in the psychyatrist for an evaluation. He said, no, that low sodium levels could cause dementia until it is resolved. She actually got the low sodium from drinking too much water and diluting the sodium in her system (never heard of that one) but, sure enough, they limited her fluid intake and she eventually became normal again after her sodium levels came up. After returning home, she is now limited in how much she can drink each day. So, she actually flushed the sodium out of her body and anytime the electrolytes are out of balance, look out! She was drinking alot of liquids to keep from getting dehydrated, which has happened before, too, and look what happened! There must be a fine line to follow....Mom is also on blood pressure and heart medication and that has an effect on her water retention(diuretics). Just hang in there and let them evaluate her and work on getting her system back to normal. She is in the best place she can be. Thank the Lord you DIDN'T bring her home only to have her relapse! Don't be in a hurry. I know you will get the verbal abuse from her, but you're tough! Remember, tough love!
Just a thought,
Hugs,
Karen
