Breaking the grazing cycle...
Am I the only one stuck in this cycle?
1. Eat a meal (perhaps a bit too much? Or too many carbs?)
2. Sugar rush makes me sleepy--overwhelming need for a nap.
3. Hour and a half later: wake up feeling good... and hungry. Probably low blood sugar.
4. Eat again and start cycle over.
Is this a version of dumping?
If you can relate to this cycle, what steps of it are the easiest to modify to break it?
The obvious change is to not overeat! I seem to have some luck if I resist the nap. What are some good snacks to raise blood sugar without starting the cycle again? I do fairly well with cheese or peanutbutter, but it is so tempting to put them on a cracker or bread, and that cycles me again!
As I sit here writing this, my mind is on going after something to stuff in my mouth--HELP!

Joy,
I believe I am also having a similiar problem, but I sit down to eat a real meal and I can't stomach it, but then I become hungry within an hour or so. If I wait to long to eat I get dizzy and just feel awful and then I gobble crackers to feel better. I am trying to keep cheese, celery and fruit available since I have the need to eat so often

How are you doing Reenie? I know I haven't been around much. I do pop in occassionally to see how things are going. I have stalled on my weight loss, I am sure it is from not eating the right things. And I too must eat every two hours or I get to feeling really sick... then I could eat anything and everything to feel better.
I exercise every day, of course I dont hurt myself. They tease me at work about not stressing myself when I work out. Oh well, I can't stand it when my heart rate increases, that makes me feel sick also.
I ordered some Ultra slim 90, which is taken at bed time, it is reported to burn off belly fat. I need to lose another 15 pounds to make goal.
And I should have my bachelors degree by next Fall! And we are still raising our grandchildren. Life is grand.
Joy,
Yep I believe this is an example of latent dumping syndrome. My heart just hammers during these bouts and I just can't keep my eyes open. Nuts, cheese, peanut butter and jerky are my safest "snacks" anything else and I'm looking longingly at my couch!!
I had a print out from one of my support groups on getting back on track and getting off the grazing cycle. To me it seemed to be just a way of scheduling your "grazing" but I'll look to see if I can find it and post it here in the next day or so. It has you eating something nutritious or drinking a protein shake about every hour to 90 minutes.
One thing I have noticed with me, fresh fruit doesn't give me a sugar rush - I just have to watch anything I leave a peel on - talk about a good colon cleanser - whoa!!

Joy,
The fruit thing was just a suggestion for an occasionaly snack for something different, maybe with a nice crunch - not a replacement of a protein snack.

Anyway- here's the article:
KAREN B'S "TIMER" PLAN FOR GETTING BACK ON TRACK
The idea of this is to stimulate your metabolism to start burning fat and stop the grazing!!!
Of course, adjust the times to your schedule, however, do NOT go past 1 ½ hours between some kind of "feedings".
6 am coffee, tea, or some other kind of warm beverage to "get things going"
7 am 8 or more oz of PURE water
8 am protein shake
9 am 1-3 oz of protein type food*
10 am 8 or more oz of pure water
11 am protein shake
noon 1-3 oz of protein type food
1 pm 8 or more oz of pure water
2 pm protein shake
3 pm 1-3 oz of protein type food
4 pm 8 or more oz of pure water
5 pm protein shake (like while cooking dinner - prevents 'tasting" and "grazing")
6 pm dinner 1-3 oz of food total, i.e., 2 oz of protein food, a bite or two of veggie and perhaps a 'taste" of a complex carb
7 pm 8 or more oz of pure water
8 pm protein shake
9 pm light snack like string cheese, deli meat or cheese, about 1 or 2 oz total
10 pm 8 or more oz pure water
? Pure water is very important to optimum health and to flush the fat cells through your body. You may drink crystal light, diet Snapple, flavored waters, etc., however, you still MUST get in the 64 oz of PURE water every day and do not count the water in shakes or the flavored waters UNLESS you are flavoring them yourself with lemon, etc. Propel is good, but still do not count towards your water.
? You may make your protein shakes with just 1 scoop for 20 g of protein or less, but your total protein shake consumption must be at least 90 g. I use the full 30 g portion for each of my shakes, but my body requires more protein supplement. Please adjust accordingly, however the importance is actually drinking them. You can make up a half a portion in 2-3 oz of water to equal 15-20 g of protein then your daily total of drinking 5 shakes would be around 100 g which is perfect for a proximal RNY.
? You will find that by setting the timer, you will never be hungry, and in fact, by the latter part of the day, you will be surprised when the timer goes off to have water, protein, or food again!
? All meals must have a beginning and an end. No more than 15-20 minutes per "mini-meal". If you are full in five minutes, STOP and discard food or put away for the next meal. It doesn't mean that you can still eat during that hour. This constitutes grazing.
? Track your food in Fitday. This helps. You will find that even tho you are eating every three hours your pouchie can't handle as much as it could have before.
? If you aren't "carbophobic" add some whole grains to your meals, but eat them LAST.
? Mix all protein shakes with water and ice only. No milk or fruit. This adds calories and causes cravings for more carbs. You may add SF syrups, or mix your shakes with SF beverages, i.e., Propel, crystal light, Fruit 2-0, etc.
Good stuff! What jumped out at me was the bit about the WATER. I am terrible about getting my water. I will work on this. I am always more successful in focusing on doing something than trying NOT to do something. I will make it a point to remind myself to eat something good BEFORE I head to graze, and if grazing seems irresistable, I will at least make myself slowly drink 8 oz of water first. I bet I will lose the urge to eat by then!
I just drank another protein drink, and so far I have avoided the dumping loop today.
I have the feeling that if I can break this cycle, I will drop a few pounds without any extreme "dieting". I have resisted that word since surgery. I just want to be in control of my life!
Thanks for the help!

Joy,
I've done the cycle many times. I've cycled through it so many times that I have my own personal Tour De Fat. I don't know if it's scheduled grazing, but if I don't eat every 3 to 4 hours, I end up with low sugar issues, try to eat the neighbor's cat and shake like Charro on crack.
Believe it or not and as disgusting as it sounds, a Slim Jim has saved me many times. I know, I know, made with beef lips and pig eyelids, but they are easy to pick up at the convenience store and keep me from eating chips and crackers. To make it even more disgusting, I tend to chew them up and spit them out instead of swallowing. The other staple is pork rinds. Again, disgusting. They soothe my urge for crunch and provide protein. I absolutely cannot drink when I eat pork rinds because they will reconstitute themselves into a full-grown sow in my belly.
Hugs,
Connie
