Nasty vacation experience
Okay, I posted the greatness of my vacation, but I also had one bad experience. I think it was probably due to the usual wanting to rush ahead on my part... My first snorkeling experience was great, so I signed up for a longer excursion. This one was a rougher boat ride and I also accepted a cup of coffee. Probably my first mistake, as I have acid stomach anyway and have been put on Zantac and had missed a dose.
Everything went fine until the provided lunch. They had some chicken which had been marinated in Teriyaki, so I took a dark meat helping and cut it into little pieces, chewed and chewed. I had not tried eating chicken before, though I have been on the list for doing so for several weeks now. Pretty soon the nausea started and a hard, painful feeling in the center of my back and under my left breast. The discomfort got worse and worse for half an hour. Once I got on the boat (we had to go back), they thought I had seasickness but I explained that wasn't it. This crew was unlike the other folks (who were actually nice, but this was a bigger tour, more impersonal), so they positioned me on the back of the boat and that was it. To make a long story short, I vomited all that chicken fairly violently. Then I was fine. The whole process took about an hour and a half.
I dropped back to fluids and soft foods and the flight home was no fun. I'm feeling better and planning to call my doctor in the morning, just to be on the safe side. What is the general opinion? Blockage? Something in the marinade -- I think they use pineapple juice, too. I have to admit I'm not sure I will ever eat chicken again and it used to be my favorite.
Like Bart Simpson, I will write 100 times "I will not try new things when away from home."

Could have bee the sauce, or the combo of the coffee, and being off the Zantac, and the sauce combined. I've heard some have problems with chicken. I've had no problems as long as it is moist, and I only eat white meat (don't like dark). I think the key there is your last stmt - don't try something new away from home. I've been guilty of that myself, and had a horrible time similar to yours at work Friday, only it lasted a lot longer (about 5 hours) . It's the mantra we can't forget after these experiences.

Gano,
Chances are it was just the Chicken. Especially if it was dry. My surgeon explained that as you swallow the motion causes the chicken to roll into a ball. Then as you eat more, more balls which stick together. You end up with a mass that your new stoma can't handle, then your body revolts and you know first hand how it ends.
It's a plausible explanation.

My vote goes to the chicken.
I can't eat it at all. My surgeon and nutritionist both said that it's not at all uncommon for post-ops not to tolerate chicken 'til MANY months out. It all depends on the individual...makes no sense, has no rhyme nor reason as to why someone is fine, but I feel like I swallowed a live chicken WHOLE when I try to eat it...
