I had my surgery March 04 and this past January I had a hernia repaired and gall bladder removed. I just found out I now have a hiatal hernia. I was told now a days it's treated with medication but just wondering if it's treated different because of the gastric bypass? Go out of town tomorrow to the Dr that did this surgery. Kind of wondering ahead of time what to expect? Thanks Diana

my mother has that but i do not have any idea what it is. she watches what she eats and it seems to not give her a problem all the time as long as she does that. what is it?

I had an hiatal hernia prior to wls surgery. Since I had the RNY and the lower stomach is separated, I cannot get the acid reflux I had before. So it is all gone. I took prevacid for years which controlled it. I am not sure what to do since you have yours now, after the WLS.

I would counsel you to make sure your WLS doctor consults on this. Basically a hiatal hernia is a tear in the diaphragm that lets the stomach rise up and get crowded by this muscle layer. It causes acid reflux. With a pouch instead of a full stomach, the implications may be somewhat different, and the medications might work somewhat differently or have different side effects. I don't really know, but I know that any time we have digestive system problems, we need to make sure we treat them with our "altered anatomy" in mind--i.e. consult with our WLS doc as well as other specialists. Let us know what they decide to do for this! Joy
