"Backing Up"

Gross and graphic subject matter follows: Does anyone else experience food "backing up" in their throats? Sometimes it feels like my food won't go into my stomach and backs up into my esophagus. Then, it seems to get stuck there causing a hard knot and pain. Ultimately, I get sick. But it's not like I'm throwing up from the stomach as much as I am just working the food back out of my throat. There is typically a lot of mucus and spit (which I think causes the hard knot trying to swallow down the food).

I have this problem occasionally, but I've discovered that it mostly happens when I either a) eat too fast b) eat too much. If I slow down, it helps immensely. I'm also discovering that when I start burping, I need to stop eating. I guess it's 'my sign'.

This is a little late but, I have had the same problem a few times. And let me tell you it was terrible! The worst pain I have ever felt in my life!!!! I don't exactly know what caused it. It has happened from eating chicken eggs and even drinking water. My esophagus kills and so does my back. I get really loud gurgling sounds in my chest and have the urge to burp but can't get it out. I then start to spit a lot. I have thrown up 4 times from it. Even from the water. One of those times was today, I had eaten a 1/4 of a grilled cheese sandwich and then the gurgling started, I stopped eating but I still got the pain. I started to spit up a lot of salvia and then I had to throw up. I threw up a pea sized piece of cheese and a huge burp at the same time. I felt better immediately. Like I said I don't know why this happens but I pray that it doesn't keep happening, I hate it so much. I hope things get better for you as well as for myself. Kelley
