Hey Marchers- I was wondering if anyone has tested the waters w/testing for dumping from eating sugars. My nutrionist told me on my 2wk visit that I would need to do this eventually!?!? With Easter just passing us by, I have done so(from my kids easter baskets) and nothing happened. I tasted a mini-cadbury caramel and nothing happened. I expected to be sick and have this piece of candy help w/my constipation.....and nothing. Has anyone else tested there waters and nothing happened?? Please advise! Kristina

We were on a road trip and rather than get a drink for each of us I got one big one to share. I was sipping outta it like nobody's business and my DH practically freaked. It was something that was so ordinary for me I never even got it. He finally told me he didn't want me to dump. After that I have tasted a teensy piece of hersheys. I did dump on yogurt and CIB though, funny huh? Gayle Queen Of Yarn Balls 320/297/175

I had 3 or 4 bites of cake at a baby shower and did fine... but just a sm taste(for doneness) of brisket Easter Sunday had me running to the potty......

I have only done this on purpose with ice cream (low carb) and that was tonight. I have dumped on other things, however. I was talking to a post op of 1 year on another board, and she was telling me that she can eat candy bars with no problem (she is currently quite underweight and is trying to gain...incredible, huh?) but when she drinks something sugary she dumps immediately. I think it may have to do with the amount of time the sugar stays in the stomach. Although we don't have a lot of gastric juices in there, I guess there may be enough to keep things from getting to the colon in too pure of a form when you have a solid. I have had a bite of cheesecake a couple weeks ago, but I had eaten a little protein prior, and I didn't have a problem. While the other day I got a cold SF latte and immediately noticed a rumbling off the first little sip. Dh drank the rest of it, needless to say! Dina

I have not dumbed, but i barf alot. LOL Right now i wish i could just take a dump!! I am pretty sure that is the cause of my crampy feeling right now. And if this is PMS cramps, it really proves God is a man! LMAO. I even took a laxitive last night and nothing happened. Most of the sweet things i have are flavored with splenda, so i have not had a problem with sweets. I think i have avoided dumping because i am scared of it, and of eating and at less then a lab rat at this point. The Schawns man was here yesterday, and i was looking throu his book to ordr stuff, and nothing even apealed to me. I ordered what i knoew the kids liked, but nothing looked good to me. I used to love their chicken, but chicken doesn't like me anymore. And i used to love grilled chicken breat with home made salsa on it. I miss that, but nothing tastes the same to me, and nothing really interests me. I wonder if i will ever like food again??

Remember what "dumping" really is....a fast dumping of sugars through the system that results in rapid heart beat, clamminess, sick feeling and then eventually diarrhea and/or vomiting. I think some people thing just diarrhea is dumping, but if not accompanied by those other things, it may not be. The heart beat is the true clue...I "dumped" 2 days post op on liquid tylenol before realizing that there was sugar alcohols in it....and it was an uncontrollable diarrhea (oozed out during sleep) so some of what you have had many not be true dumping.

I can't imagine why your nutritionist advised you to try to dump. I'm not going to try. Suppose I eat a candy bar and find that it goes down fine. I got fat because of eating sweets and goodies. Then I can just see me gaining all my weight back. If it doesn't go down fine then I am going to feel sick, and I can do without that. My dd had wls 2 years ago, she can eat sweets w/o dumping but only after she has had a meal. If she eats sweets on an empty stomach she is sure to be sick and has to lie down. Louise -21

AMEN Louise!! I know those Hash Browns made me dump. Would a brownie or cookie or cheese cake? We will assume yes, because finding out NO would be devistating to me. It would make the old "OH JUST ONCE" virus too easy to catch. -Sherrie

I am new to this site, and just today I had a problem with dumping. My surgery date was 3/1/04. This is the first time I have had this problem. If sugar will take care of this I will surely try some. Not to over do it of course. Lynette

I have tested the waters and have found that I'm not a dumper which in a way makes me sad and makes me happy. I tested this by having a bite of my friends chessecake during Easter dinner.
