Hello Marchers I have a confession today, I have been craving chilli, and today, I ate a hot dog bun with chilli and I was able to eat the whole thing, I was just very slightly uncomfortalbe after that for a few minutes, but then I was okay, the chilli turn the bun to mush, and I had about 3 oz of chilli and the bun, should I be able to eat this in one setting, or have I stretched my pouch, and also by the way, I was able to eat a whole grilled cheese sandwich, and I did not feel uncomfortalbe, I am just wondering where this is soft foods maybe that it was easier to go down? Please let me know if you was able to do the above. Thanks Tori

Tori, I can't eat more than 2 oz of anything other than yogurt or very well chewed cottage cheese. I've been craving a grilled cheese sandwich, but haven't had one because I was afraid the bread would swell up in my stomach. Are you chewing really, really well. I understand that people can get more in if they chew everything to mush. I also understand that if it takes a really long time to eat, you can get more in because what you ate first is already through the pouch. My surgeon says not to extend a meal more than 20 minutes. I have a 4 oz pouch - sounds like you might also. I would jus****ch the calories for future reference and try to keep on track. I can eat a whole dog + a side dish without discomfort but I discovered the dogs were a LOT higher in calories and fat than a lot of other things I like (like the turkey salami), so I modify my eating like that. Right now I am have a turkey salami sandwich with mustard on Orowheat light bread (they are very small slices). I cut the crust off and put 2 pieces of meat on it and I think I might be able to eat it all but it will satiate me, most definitely. Everything together on this sandwich will be 140 calories, while 1 reduced fat Hebrew National hotdog is I think 150 - or that might be the regular dog. But I know it was over 100. I also have been filling up with veggies first when I can (as long as I don't forsake my protein, which unfortunately sometimes happens). It's great to get full on broccoli when never in my life before was I able to do that! Dina

How are you guys eating like that? I havent even tried bread, let alone eaten a whole sandwich! I dont think that we should be able to eat a whole grilled cheese sandwich, or a whole hot dog bun with 3 ounces of chili! And Tori, you just have been posting about the problems you have been having and not loosing any weight and I dont understand how you can eat a whole grilled cheese sandwich and not be able to get in more than 20gm of protein a day. I'm sitting here right now drinking a protein shake(20gm of protein). Protein should be the first thing that you think about eating and all the foods that you eat all day, you should remember your protein first. I am getting in my 60-80gms of protein a day drinking 2 20gm protein shakes and then making sure that everything I eat during the day has a high protein content. Tuna, beef, pork rinds, string cheese, I have a large egg fried(with pam) for breakfast(1 large egg has 18 grams of protein) so by lunch time with my shake and the egg I have already had 40 grams of protein. Tori you really need to watch what your eating and stop eating things that you ate before the surgery because they arent helping you in any way! Be stronger than your food cravings, thats what got you in the situtation where you needed the surgery in the first place! ~Nicole 216/175/120 -41 pounds 55 pounds from goal

Hey Nicole-- just a quick question about the egg. My surgeon gave me a list of things I should try to stick to, and eggs are not on there until I get at least 8 weeks out. (I'll be 2 weeks out on Wednesday, and am still eating soft foods only). I know this is too soon to eat certain things, but I am just curious about eggs for when the time comes. I love eggs. Do you scramble them? Or sunny side up, then mash? I would think hard boiled would not be a good idea... what do you think? Thanks!

Hey Tammy for some reason scrambled does not like me so I fry an egg in my nonstick pan with pam! And then I sprinkle it with franks red hot sauce or mild salsa! It is so good!! It is so weird seeing what everyones doctors will and will not allow. Like a I am eating salad(lettuce) and I know a lot of people who say that their doctor says they should not eat it for at least a year, but the nutrionist for my doctor says she lived on salad when she went to regular foods! go figure LOL ~Nicole

Well said, indeed! I wouldn't touch bread, either. I was told in nutrition class that it will swell in your stomach. On Friday I ate some tuna salad (homemade w/Miracle Whip Lite) on a few saltine crackers, and not only did it satisfy my craving to chew something, Junior tolerated it quite well. I ate some grilled whitefish on Saturday night -- about 1 oz -- and man! It was good. Yesterday, I ate three cold, boiled shrimp. Today I ate some chicken salad for lunch, and Junior liked that, too. I'm still supposed to be on full liquids, but I found after trying some of these foods that are on my food plan for 6 weeks-4 months, I am more satisfied with my food choices and am better able to get my 75 grams of protein in each day. And at 2 weeks post-op, I'm down 15 pounds!!! Have a good afternoon, all! -Marcie

The amount I could eat varied but the first week I was able to eat food, I had 3 oz of tunafish - and my pouch is only supposed to be 1 oz. Later, I made myself a "sandwich" - 1 pc wheat bread toasted and then flattened, one slice turkey, one slice lowfat cheese - I was able to eat a little more than half of it. I started to get afraid that I could eat too much or that I was stretching my pouch. I try to limit myself now to the volume I am supposed to be able to eat and stop there, which is well before I get any uncomfortable feeling. Good luck, Jennifer

I do not know how you could have ate all that at one time. I am currently only able to eat 2-3 tablespoons of anything at this time. Just the thought of eating bread makes me gag. Although I do eat maybe 10 of the Goldfish crackers at a sitting. My husband is 6 monthes out from his RNY and is only able to eat at most 3/4's of a cup and this is only if it has a liquid in it. He has had no bread at all in that time, just flavored pretzels pieces in the last 2 months. Please be very careful with that amount of food. My surgery was a revision to a RNY from a VBG (staple line blew at some point in the 22 years since the original surgery). So I have gone through the pain of surgery twice and believe me one time should be enough for anybody. Good luck.
