Apples!!!!!
Always have always will love apples. Fresh crisp crunchy apples. Macouns are my favorite. They ahve a short season so when they come in I scoop them up ASAP. I found out that my pouch doens't love apples as much as I do on a regular basis.
Who knew?
For the past couple of years since the surgery I'd always peel the apples and this year I said gee lets try it with the skin cause theres alot of good stuff in there like vitamins! minerals! taste! that plus I didn't have a knife and I really wanted that apple!
I had one on saturday No problems at all! it was awesome! sweet crisp crunch the perfect macoun apple. I had another sunday! Again on Monday And another on Tuesday! I can still feel the sweet juicy dripping done my chin AND the pain of not chewing that darn apple skin enough.
I got over confident.
Didn't chew that skin well enough and my pouch said HEY you up there with the mouth. I'm a little bitty pouch that sure I let you think you can eat everything now but you can't.
I almost doubled over when it hit. The pain! Geesh I really did think I might have done something horrible to the pouch and that I would have to go to the emergency room. Of course I'm exagerating it was very painful but not that bad I'm jsut a big baby! Plus I've not had that kind of pain in a long time now.
no apples today.
Glad you're okay, Pam. I can eat apples without a hitch; in fact, I can eat anything without any problem whatsoever - which is a REAL problem. These past two weeks, I've been going through another one of those bouts of insatiable hunger - no matter what I eat, no matter how often I eat, I am left with that feeling of being horribly empty and wanting more, more, more. So far, I'm fighting the good fight with only a few lapses - a piece of chocolate here, a piece of peanutbutter toast there - but man, am I hungry! And don't tell me to drink more water cuz then I'll just float away. Anyone else going through this??? M.
Well, Maureen, are ya ready for another one of Uncle Mikey's half-baked theories? I have always found that when summer ends and the leaves start to turn that I feel an urge to eat more. I often wondered if this was some instinctive and primitive urge to "Bulk Up" for the lean days of winter to come?? It's certainly true in the animal kingdom and we aren't as far removed from the wild as we would like to think. Unfortunately, this modern, fast-food world in which we live has no "lean days of winter"!! Well anyway......that's my theory. Of course, it could be all B.S. and just be another Fat Guy excuse to eat like a hog!!
Hey Pam......You might want to try making your own applesauce. We love tart apples and all of the commercial applesauce is very bland and loaded with sugar. The home-made stuff is out of this world. It's a bit of work to make, but my wife makes a big batch and puts it up in canning jars. If properly canned, it will last indefinitely and there's nothing like it. If you don't want to do that much work, I'm pretty sure that there are "Natural" brands that don't have all of that sugar.
Mike
Please post the recipe for homemade applesauce - sounds great! And you may be on to something with your theory...but doesn't help with the cravings! Hey, maybe if I start wearing my down coat and ski boots, my body will get the message that I don't need to stock up on fuel -- will keep you posted...M.
did we have this change of seasons discussion last fall? i think we did...and i agree with your theory
i am too feeling the need to eat and eat and eat so maybe reenie and i should go lock ourselves up in a grocery store for the week? i want one with great produce, a grill and some nice steaks!
my hubby is the applesauce maker in our house- and each batch is diff-some have some skins some have apricots or berries or cranberries-soem just cinnamon etc --never the same twice! we freeze whatever we cannot eat in a few days- i should can but i would have to get out all of that stuff...and wash the jars and and and--easier to freeze-he does the work!
WELL, Mike, on October 10, 2005 (almost a year ago to the date!) I posted this:
"I can't seem to quiet this nagging, incredibly restless urge to eat. It's at full-tilt these days and I'm very afraid. My weight is creeping upward. Any takers on this one? How are you all coping with this? Maureen"
To which you responded:
"Well....for what it's worth......My wife always has to fight an urge to overeat and pack on a few pounds this time of year. As soon as the days start to get shorter and the nights get a bit cooler, this starts to become a problem. She feels that it's an urge to bulk up for the winter that dates back to the bad old days before central heat and other modern conveniences. I think that there's some logic to her theory, because it's the only time of year that she has this trouble. As for me, it was never a seasonal thing, although I do get even stronger urges this time of year. Most creatures in the wild tend to fatten up for the "Lean days" of winter. I don't know how this plays out for Connie and the other "Desert Dwellers"??!!"
I think this empirical data supports your theory!!! So, if it's truly a matter of "storing up for the winter" I better figure out a way to hybernate so that I don't nash my way back to my former fat self! By the way, lots of good responses on that date - hope all are doing well and faring better this year...I'm hanging on by my fingernails. M.
See that .....Margo nailed it.....we did have this discussion before. Well if nothing else, we're consistent!! I'll pester my wife for her recipe for applesauce. I think that she usually keeps it fairly simple using several types of apple for flavor and throws in some cinnamon. I'll find out for sure and let you know.
Mike
Hi Pam, Glad you are better now, but I was always told not to
eat the skin on apples or tomatoes. I have never tried the apple skin. I guess now I know why. I do not peal the tomatoes
& that has never bothered me, but, does not sound like I want
to go through what you did from the apple skin. So I will still peal mine. Thanks for the warning!!
