I had surgery on 3/29 I'm 10 days out now and I think I can drink way too much!! My doc puts us on complete liquids for 4 weeks then 4 weeks of soft foods before we are alowed to try real food. Everyone tells me they were only able to drink 3-4 oz. in the liquid stage. I usually drink 6 oz. in 20 min. then I stop but I never get a full feeling. Today I was sipping while on the computer and before I knew it I had drank 10 oz. in 30 min. That just seems way too much I'm really nervous about this. What can all of you drink??

Cheryl --- I had my first follow-up with my surgeon today and he assured me tha****er will not stretch my pouch. I can gulp water like there is no tomorrow -- he was actually excited that I can easily get in my water. Dr Wongsa explained that the reason I could barely sip water immediately post-op was due to the fact that your pouch and the outlet are VERY swollen immediately after surgery, causing you to barely be able to sip the water. Once the swelling subsided, I was able to drink the water more normally. Liquids move through your new stomach very quickly thereby allowing you to continue to drink. I was worried like you --- but there is no cause for alarm. Get your water in, you need it to flush the fat out on your journey!! Best of luck to you! Nancy Lap RNY 3/22/04 250/226.5/150

By the way, I can drink approx. 32 ounces in less than an hour, if the water is ice cold. If the water is room temp, I have a tough time getting it down. I actually feel the "full" feeling almost immediately after 1 sip. I noticed that today while I was out and about. My water got warm sitting in the car while I was at the surgeon. Wow I think you may have helped me with my problem...I have never cared for ice or iced drinks so drink everything sort of luke warm and am having a real hard time with drinking water because of that feeling. I will try iced and cold today to see if it makes a difference. Thanks! Sally 208/187/130

I can drink at a pace that I previously would have regarded as "normal". Funny story though. I reached for my glass of crystal lite yesterday and suddenly realized my 2 year old grandson was in the room and would want some if he caught me so I chugged down at least 8 oz in about 5 seconds. Pepe le Pouch drains liquids pretty fast but couldn't keep pace with that! I had about 5 minutes of "I'm going to hurl" feelings before it finally drained. Duh! So, even liquids can fill you up and overflow if you drink enough fast enough!!!! Joy -29 lbs

I have been able to drink as much as I want a since right after surgery and my doc is pleased with that. I am 3 weeks post op and have been drinking diet soda in addition to other beverages for a week. I am also now on regular foods - shrimp, fish, cheese, salads, veggies and fruits and crackers. Meat and bread don't go down very well, so I just avoid them for now. -19 Louise

I thought carbonation was a total no-no...how can you drink diet soda? Do you drink your beverages cold, icy cold, or room temp? I am discovering something today about using ice that is really helping me with constipation.....

i seem to be the opposite of many-i do better if it is lukewarm or warmer--ice cold hits miss bitsie and she just clams up! i can sit and sip crystal lite or hot decaf tea like it's going out of style but plain water is different-and i drank water well pre-op. i am still catching myself remembering to sip---i get gassy and don't "burp" like normal-it's a rolling sound???
