HI, Hello to all the Marchers~ I know I dont post much, but I do read and appreciate all the wisdom that comes from this board. Just curious...anyone else suffering from bad breath and yucky gross taste in your mouth all the time syndrome? Its driving me nuts. Not sure what I can 'suck on' to help with this. Have tried tic tacs, and am obsessive about brushing my teeth but.... my 4 year old wouldnt sit with me on the couch b/c it was so bad. I have never had a problem with this before....I know it has to be related...just curious. Heres hoping I am not alone on this one~!!! Kris

Kris, you aren't alone on this. I was in the same spot. I even had white junk all over my tongue. They said it was due to the antibiotics that we were given in the hospital. I find the worse (and I never noticed this before) was when I wake up. It does not matter how often I brushed my teeth the say before...when I wake up the next morning...I can blow a house down. I am wondering if it is due to not eating enough nutrients and stuff.. who knows. I do know mine has gotten a lot better for the exception of first mornings. ROFL Bethany - we're just posting right along with each other at the same time, huh? Actually, what this is is Ketosis. It's harmless and caused by the body breaking down and burning fat. See my other post for more... Dina

White gunk all over your tongue is thrush... a lovely yeast infection in the mouth.

Kris - you are suffering from ketosis! It's the body's process of breaking down and burning fat, so you should actually be happy you taste it! The only way to combat it is by brushing your teeth, sucking on mints, etc. You can also try brushing and scraping your tongue, but I also find that eating a saltine helps a little bit. Don't overdo the saltines, but they can be effective in killing off the taste and smell for awhile. If you eat too many of them, you can completely take yourself out of ketosis. Not something you want right now. Dina

Ketosis is a strong sweetish smell. It is a byproduct of breaking down fat to use for energy (hooray). But I had a really bad stomach acid type smell. I took zinc supplements and it seemed to make it go away. The breath strips would not phase it. Good luck! Joy -28 lbs

Joy - I only WISH I could have ketosis like that. I've never known ketosis to smell sweet. It usually smells rather putrid....like morning breath, and tastes metallic. Oh and usually my mouth is pretty dry feeling even while drinking water when I'm in ketosis. Dina

I FOUND THAT IT IS WORSE WHEN I DRINK PROTEIN SHAKES. NOW THAT I HARDLY EVER DRINK THEM IT IS NOT NEARLY AS BAD. I JUST BRUSHED ALOT MORE AND THEN SUCKED ON TICTACS. LADONNA -40

Kris, A nurse told me that once you begin to eat solid foods on a regular basis the bad breath will go away. My breath is horrible. I can taste it and it makes me want to yak!!! I'm still on clear liquids though so I'm hoping in a month or so I'll be eating food and the nasty breath will go away.

My doctor told me to use the breath strips like Listerine and Eclipse. They do help for a while!
