Vioxx or Celebrex?????????

Hey, Any one able to take these yet? I was on Vioxx prior to surgery, had to stop it 2 weeks before. My ability to walk has almost come to a stop. I can barely walk across the room, much less the amount I'm supposed to be walking for my weight loss. My hips have been a problem for 2 decades, but with the arthritis medicine it's been under control. Now - things are as bad as they've ever been. With your Doctor's OK has anyone started back on these yet? Virginia, My surgeon actually prescribed Vioxx to start the day after my surgery - I think as an anti-inflammatory. I had never taken it before but since it was one of 3 meds he gave me to start I'm sure he felt it was safe. I had no side effects from it. Debi F

Virginia, My surgeon and bariatric coordinator and dietician said NO Celebrex or Vioxx because of the damage anti-inflammatories can do to your stomach. Mine is OK with Bextra. My husband has heard of pain meds that are a patch you put on, so that shouldn't give your tummy a problem. I see my doc on Wednesday and you can be sure I'm gonna ask him about that! I, like you, am having mega-pain trying to get my walking done. Hopefully, my doc will let me start swimming! 298 / 268 / 150

I'm so sorry that you are fighting this now! I have been fortunate. I quit my Celebrex 10 days preop and by the time I was moving around, the weight loss is almost offsetting the loss of the med. I am still stiff in the mornings, but it is tolerable, so I am not going back on it now. I do have the same question though, because I know that the arthritis is not gone. I think there are some other similar acting meds that do not have the same stomach effects. I would normally suggest asking your WLS surgeon, but in your case, I'd say go back to whoever prescribed them for you and explain that you need the drug with the least likely stomach side effects. I hope that your increasing weight loss will have a positive effect on your pain. Joy

Celebrex is supposed to be safe on the tummy. I see doc on Tuesday, want me to ask his opinion???? I have some arthritic conditions, but take Aleve on a regular basis (not since surgery tho). Anyone know what docs think about meds for migraines???I suffer horribly from these and wonder what I'll be able to take for them now. Had one the day of surgery and right at the hospital entrance from pain. Poor hubby didn't know what to do with me at that point. Thank good for anesthesiologists!!!!!!!!!!! Virginia, My surgeon said absolutely not! Not now anyway (3 weeks post op) He told me to take Tylenol (no more than 6 a day) I am in a lot of pain too from a bad hip, shoulder & back, but I try to take short walks. I also use "Tiger Balm " or other rub on arthritis medicine. They help some. Good luck, Linda N.

I was on a great deal of Celebrex, which I had to stop one week before surgery. My doctor has not given me the green light on it yet. I plan to bring it up on my next checkup, which will be about seven weeks post op. I'm terribly stiff and so on, so I get what you are talking about, believe me!!! If you can't even do the exercise you're supposed to be doing, I think you should call him up, tell him that, and ask if you can go back on it at this point. There is a lot of disagreement over whether Celebrex really slows healing or not, so you may be far enough into the process that he'll feel it appropriate to start again. After all, *you've been through ENOUGH.* Gano
