Two weeks out and doing fine!

I had my lap RNY March 15th 2004 and all is well. I am tired of cream soup but that is really all I can complain about. I was in the hospital from Monday to early Thursday. I only needed the morphine about every 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours instead of the every twenty minutes they allow. After I was out I was given Percaset (sp?) and it worked great and I DID NEED it every 5 hours instead of the 6 I had to wait but I did ok that last hour. I was able to go without pain med at all this past Friday and Saturday but had to take a dose about 4am Sunday morning. The best way to take it is in those little medicine cups with the smallest amount of fruit boost as possible to make it liquid and then "chase" it with a separate med-cup pf boost. (Sort of like shooting Tequila and sucking a lime right after) It is still pretty nasty but the pain will be gone soon and that makes it worth while. Dr. Shimer and Gilda were wonderful as well as the entire hospital crew. I had wonderful care from everyone. I was lucky to have Chuck as one of my nurses since he was one of Dr. Shimer's patients and had been there done that! He knew exactly what I was going though and what it was feeling like. He has lost about 70 pounds himself (Way to go Chuck! ) So here I am two weeks out, I think I lost about 13 pounds but will find out for sure tomorrow when I have my two week check up. I only almost threw up once in the hospital, thank goodness my sweet bariactic buddy was there to hand me something to throw up in even though in the end I didn't actually throw up. I can certainly tell when I have eaten something I shouldn't. One day I accidentally took a bite out of a regular Popsicle instead of the sugar fee ones I bought and I knew that ...ooopppsss ...wrong! Imagine how it feels when you take a swig of sour milk by mistake. It doesn't make you sick but you know you don't want it! Same sort of feeling when you get something too sugary. I am ready for some scrambled eggs and I thank God for the Chocolate Instant Breakfast. The boost drinks don't settle too well with me yet. If you are going in for this surgery I suggest taking a little step stool to help get in and out of the bed. It made it a LOT easier for me to get into the big bariactic bed. When you go home I suggest getting one of those wedge pillows (Bed Bath and Beyond sells them for $24.) The wedge really helped me sleep better on my back. When your tushy is big as mine and you try to sleep on your back without a wedge your head feels a lot lower than your tush! Only in the last day or so have I been able to lay on my sides and even then it isn't really comfortable. Also take some of those little medicine cups home with you to help you take your pain meds. Walgreen sells a pill crusher that really works well. I use the cutter end first to cut the pill in quarters then put the quarters in the crusher end to make the pill into the fine powder. Then I mix it with a teaspoon or two of the fruit boost to make it liquid. One other thing...when it is time for them to take the drain tube out of you make sure the nurse opens the relief valve to break the vacuum BEFORE pulling the tube because if it still has a vacuum it is going to feel like they are ripping your guts out, it is only supposed to feel slithery and wiggly coming out NOT PAINFUL. Good Luck to everyone and feel free to write me if you have any questions or concerns.

Patti, Please check the label on the Boost drink, I may be wrong but, I think they have quite alot of sugar. That may be why they don't set to well. I'm so glad you are doing so well. Betsy
