Hey there, OMG, my gums started bothering me today so bad, I'm practically in tears. I know that I have gum disease and usually get my teeth cleaned every 3-4 months, but having had so many pre-op evals to do, I missed my appt a few months ago and now I guess I'm paying for it. Anyone else experiencing this and what are you doing for it? My extra-soft toothbrush feels like sandpaper on my gums. Do you think its related to not chewing for 2wks...kinda like not using teeth has made the gums sensitive? Wendy

Wendy, my gums do not hurt so much but like for a week - 2 weeks after surgery I noticed I could not get rid of this bad taste and I am sure bad breath. It was terrible. And I had all this white junk on my tongue. I heard it was due to the antibiotics they give in the hospital but anyone experience that? Hi Wendy, You may want to swish with hydrogen peroxide. This will help kill the bacteria that is attacking your gums. It tastes nasty (don't swallow it), but it's the best thing for mouth infections. You may also want to switch to Sensodyne toothpaste and use some Anbesol or Orajel on your gums until you can get to a dentist. Those topical gels really help even when pain relievers don't. Hope you feel better! -Eve

Exact same thing happened to me. When we are loosing weight the bad taste comes from our body burning fat instead of food. it is called keytosis. This will also cause the accumulation of plaque on your teeth and gums to be greater than normal. I have to brush my teeth 2 to 3 times a day to prevent the gums from hurting. Get in to have your teeth cleanded as soon as possible and ask the dentist if you can have three month appointments for the next year while you are loosing weight.

Well, you're not alone. I had the sore gums when I brushed my teeth too for the first two weeks. It seems to be going away now though. I think I attributed it to having been in so much pain that I didnt pay attention to much else. So, when I did anything, every little nerve was awake and irritated. I hope it goes away soon for you. -Donna
