Mederma anyone? (Scars)
Anyone using Mederma on their incision scars at all? I just got some last night and was not sure if I should use it this soon or not (over 2 weeks out). The only thing that is still open are the doggone staples, but everything else is healed nicely. I wasn't sure if I should still Betadine the incision line or if I could use the Mederma this soon. I went ahead and tried the Mederma today though. The stupid staple holes are so red and irritated I'm wondering if THEY aren't going to be a worse scar than the actual incision!

I am using Mederma. I am 3.5 wks out and started using it at 2.5 wks out.
Do not use if you have open wounds. I used some skin lotion after the staples came out. Then when the scabs were healed I started using the Mederma.
Mederma is used for new and old scars. Don't ru**** Make sure the incision and staples holes are healing well.

I used mederma on my 9 yr old last summer after the appendectimy. YOU MUST WAIT UNTIL there is NO SCAB -- i believe it says so in the instructions... the danger is a contaminated tube(mircobs in the air) and that the ointment itself is not sterile.. It worked well though, and lessoned his battle wounds.
Thanks for the info. I was gingerly when I put it on today and just put it on the healed incision scar and not on the staple holes just in case, but now that you pointed out the reasons, I'll wait until those dang staples are out. Even though I used my finger to put it on, I understand about the ointment itself not being sterile. Thanks!

Yes, I started using Mederma the first week after my surgery. There were a few scabs hanging around, but most of them had fallen off already (my doc said I healed pretty fast). I am using it 3-4 times a day and sometimes inbetween I put on a Vitamin E gel. I don't know if it is going to help. I am only 3 and a half weeks post op. I have heard Mederma is good stuff and for what I paid for a tiny tube it better work! We will have to keep in touch to see if we both have good results. I had the open surgery so it was really important to me to minimize the scar.
