I gloating a little bit here because my surgeon (E. Patchen Dellinger) was involved in conducting this study. I did a Yahoo search on him and he is renowned!
It also dispells the belief that having this surgery done laparoscopically poses any more threat than open.
I don't mean to frighten anyone with this. I knew coming in that 2% was a more realistic national average of mortality post-op.

Short and to the point.
I don't even 'ponder' open vs. lap. Whatever procedure one has had is the one they'll swear allegience to. I would've gone with either, but both surgeons recommended lap for me, and since my surgeon has 19 yrs experience in lap of ALL types, I never thought twice. Someone I Know swears that open is the only way to go...maybe it's 'cuz theirs was done open. As I said, I think it's a non-issue and don't "go there". It's the old "Coke or Pepsi" thing.
Good article...thanx for sharing. (You SHOULD feel good 'bout your surgeon...he's published!!
