FEELING ASHAMED AND CONFUSED
**** I had a great reply all completed and whomp! deleted by internet powers that only exist to mystify me.
Sorry, this is secondhand, it'll never be as good as the first, but here's my general point:
I believe that both ignorance and shallowness are pervasive in our society. It's really an awful combination. I don't believe, with her attitude, that there is a thing you could have said to that woman to truly change her mind or her heart. It's unfortunate but probably very true. In your silence, you weren't agreeing with her narrow opinion, you were graciously ducking out of a battle you most likely would not have won. The best thing you can do is to continue to act with kindness, love and understanding towards everyone.
The people who are open to your message of kindness will learn from your example. Those who are closed off to it wouldn't get it if you screamed it from a mountaintop.
You did the right thing
Jill

Hi! There are 2 real questions (with different answers, unfortunately)
1) What SHOULD I have done? All of the things stated here are great.
2) What WOULD I have done? Well, it depends on the day. On a secure day, I might do something to cause the person to think, but on many days, I would stand there, terrified that I would be discovered as a "formerly fat person".
There, I said it. I would probably have tried to pass as "normal". I would not join in the complaint or ridicule, but I would try to distract and change the subject as quickly as possible to avoid discovery and discomfort. It's not pretty, but it's the truth.
