Marchers, My surgeon does not have me on a special diet at any time pre-op. But, do you think I should be doing some protein shakes at this time? Surgery is 6 days and wake up. Number 2 question, Joy mentioned zinc, should I take the supplement now to prevent hair loss? I went out and bought zinc, iron, one a day, calcium citrate, and omaga #3, now I don't know if I should be taking them. The PA said one multi vitamin and 3 tums. Oh yah, when I get stressed I shop and eat, can't buy food or clothes now so I'm in the health food store HeBeeGeeBees again The Boop being nerbus

Hi Betty, I started the protein drinks about a month before my surgery (1 a day) my Dr. said it would help speed up the healing prosess. I also started my vitamins then too. My surgery was on the 4th and its been 7 days and I don`t still feel like a train wreck !!! lol ! so maybe theres something to all of it ! hope this helped some. Debbie

Hi Betty, I've been doing extra protein in some form or another for a while now to fortify myself. I am not really doing extra vitamins now. I have my Flintstones chewables and my 600 mg chewable tums with calcium for after per the doctor's instructions. As for a special diet, if they didn't tell you anything specific, my suggestion would be to eat light the day or two prior .. .. you want to be sure that you are not 'impacted'. I heard a story that my doctor never had his patients do any bowel prep .. UNTIL he had one who was well .. ya know .. and since then . the rest of us have had the ole Fleet Phosphasoda thingy to do. Hugs, Mo doin' the almost 10 days and a wake up happy Mo dance

Thanks Mo, I do not have to do the fleet thingy either. The surgeon just told me not to have my 'last supper' the night before surgery. (((HUGS))) backatcha! Betty

I am having surgery Tuesday and was told to continue the vitamins but NO Calcium anymore before surgery. Something to do with constipation I think....and protein drinks are good any time.

I am 9 days post-op and DONT do the protein shakes now except to find one you like. You will be SICK of them so dont mess with it now unless told by your Dr. Good luck to you. Dont worry all will be fine. You will go to sleep and wake up on the losing side. LaDonna -20lbs

Please find out about the bowel clearing routine. It's for your safety, not just your doctor's aesthetics. Also, there are medications you should stop taking. I had to stop my Celebrex one week before surgery. I had had another accident and had to stop pain medication 3 days before (and still I think my pain threshold was too high, so the morphine didn't work, aaak). Check with your surgeon's office about this, o.. I bought some of the foods and tried out the Protein drinks, so that I could find one I liked, though it will be quite a while before I'm drinking it. (9 days post op). I did cut down my food intake in the final day or two, though a couple of the things I had were treats. I have the impression I had less discomfort after surgery because of this.
