In Poor Taste

I was appalled when I signed on to AOL today and saw an article by CBS...They were reporting on the new Add Campaign by our government about obesity. It shows people finding spare body parts and stating that someone must have lost their "double chin" "love handles" and "spare tire" doing various things like taking the stairs, eating veggies, and walking on the beach... I thought that the commercials were disgusting and degrading. Whitney

I was thinking the same thing when I was reading about it on the internet. There is one picture of a stomach with a stick poked into it that looks like a stomach after surgery with a drain in it...and that is what caught my eye. The premise if ok...they are trying to show that Americans are mostly overweight and I think it is a campaign to start getting healthier, but kind of gross.

Now the nation will go on this eat right/diet/exercise kick which is not a bad thing. It just makes me wonder if it will make things easier or harder for people trying to get WLS approved. It all comes down to the media shaping peoples minds that it is our fault for the way we are. In some cases that may be true, but in most cases I believe not. Most of us have tried every fathomable diet/exercise regime only to be disappointed somewhere down the road. Plus there is the fact that advertisers shove images of beautifully orchestrated meals in front of our face 24/7. They portray visions of healthy choices at fast food places that in most cases offer more carbs and fat than their ever beloved cheeseburgers. We go and buy the stuff thinking we are doing the right thing when in fact it is usually just as bad as eating a super sized combo. Sure we can resist the temptation to go to such places but when it is broadcast every where we look, sooner or later any one would give in. Please, Marcher Family, don't let the media fool you into thinking this is your fault for being MO. They have just as much blame in this as anyone. Just my $.02 worth. See you on the other side. Have a great day!

My answer to all those people who think you should just "diet" is "It is easy enough to lose weight, but it is impossible to keep off!" Then I ask them if they know ANYONE who has kept a large amount of weight off for 5 years or more? the answer is usually no. Yes, I was thinking that too....with the push for healthier life styles and diets and restaurants to offer smaller portions and healthier choices, the approvals for WLS might get tighter until they see if it works or not. Which of course it won't.

Well this reminds me I was watching the news here in the LA area and our morning show it's like a morning show any where else it's pure entertainment with Jillian Barberie in a tube top. So they were doing a report about this campaign that the government wants to emplment and the fast food lawsuits. I swear all the people they should at the different fast food places were severely obese. Then Jillian Barberie said, "Why can't those people just control what's going in there mouths? Then there wouldn't be a problem!" I couldn't believe it! I will never again watch that show
