Any Type 1 diabetics?
Hi there,
I'm wondering if anyone has type 1 diabetes and nervous about not having insulin while in the hospital. I've had diabetes for 12 yrs, always insulin dependant, am taking about 80 units/day via MiniMed 508 Pump. I hate the thought of disconnecting the morning of surgery and my blood sugars going high and feeling very thirsty. I know they'll have the IV fluids and will monitor me, but the thought of coming out of surgery, already thirsty from anesthia (sp?) and the effect being worse cuz of high blood sugars, is gonna drive me crazy ....already had nightmares of my tongue sticking to the roof of my mouth. LOL!
Well the final countdown, I'm peacefully calm this week and giving all my fears to God now. Went to visit 2 post-ops in ICU yesterday from my support group, and they are doing great...I think it eased my mind to "see" where I'll be on Monday and to know their doing well and even walking the next day.
Best of luck to all the Marchers.......
Wendy
Hi Wendy I am type 2 and I have had several abdominal surgeries and I can tell you from experience you will be thirsty! It is going to sound a lil funny but I have learned a lil trick ,you can start practicing it now it has helped me in the past. with dry mouth and no water to be found i hate that sticky tongue to the roof of the mouth!!!, yuk! .ok
If you feel under your tongue where the saliva comes out...ok got it...well if you move it around a alot it produces saliva, I dont know the proper medical term for it but it works great for me...try it and let me know how it works,,hugz Mary
