In addition to the clear liquids you listed, you could also include broth (dont forget ramen soup mix broth) and SF jello. None of these have protein unless you add protein mix. Full liquids allow you to add milk and plain yogurt and SF pudding which do have some protein. At 1 gm protein per oz of milk, you would have to drink 60 oz of milk per day to get 60 oz of protein. So most use protein powder, at least at this stage of diet. This is what I came home on. I could also have V8 and cream of wheat (made thin). The V8 has lots of nutrients, but not protein. The cream of wheat has some protein, but not enough at the quantities you can consume. My doctor let me move to soft foods on the 7th day post op. This adds in cottage cheese, soft cooked vegetables, FF refried beans, mac & cheese. Of these cottage cheese, mac & cheese, and beans have protein. Until you get to add meat (for me ground meat at week 4), it will be next to impossible to get enough protein without supplements. My doctor said to use the supplements, but not in place of real food. Use it between meals as part of the liquid requirement. After a couple of months, it may be possible to reduce the supplements, but for most WLS patients, we should accept that we may need supplements of both protein and vitamins for life. The only way to know for sure is frequent regular testing. Joy
