What is a G Tube? Where do they put it and how long is it in there? Also I haven't read anything about insision care. Do they have you put clean gauze and stuff on it or do you just leave it alone? Thanks....

Cynthia, unsure about the G tube. All I know is what a JP Drain is and that is the drain you get after your surgery until you go home. As far incision care, my doc put some strong tape on the incision and gauze over it. I now have the guaze off but he told me not to take the tape off unless it is almost off anyways. Hope this helps Bethany AKA Da Offishal Riddler 6 Days into NewPouch and feeling great! A riddle a day will keep the Marchers pounds AWAY!

After surgery I am gonna have 2 tubes in me. One in my nose that will come out while in recovery. The 2nd one in my old stomach. It has to drain and can also be used to feed you if there is a problem and give you meds if needed. That tube will be under your left rib cage and mine will come out when I see the Dr 2 weeks after surgery. Prior to coming home it will be closed off put right after surgery it will drain into a pouch at the side of the bed. I will also have an IV placed around the collar bone area. that will be put in after they get me to sleep.

OK THE G TUBE I THINK IS NG TUBE. THAT GOES DOWN YOUR THROAT WHEN YOU ARE ASLEEP AND COMES OUT BEFORE YOU WAKE. THE JP DRAIN IS THE FUN THING YOU GET TO HAVE HANGING ON YOU FOR AWHILE. IT IS PUT THERE SO EXCESS FLUIDS CAN DRAIN INSTEAD OF BUILD UP.THIS HELPS WITH INFECTION.I KEEP IT COVERED WHEN I SHOWER AND TAKE THE BANDAGES OFF WHEN I AM DONE. I CLEAN AROUND IT WITH PEROXIDE AND THEN COVER IT BACK UP. THE HOSPITAL GAVE ME ENOUGH GUAZE AND TAPE TO LAST TILL I GET IT OUT. I HAVE TO DRAIN IT A COUPLE TIMES A DAY. IT IS MORE OF A PAIN IN THE BUTT THAN ANYTHING I CANT WAIT TILL IT IS GONE. I GET IT OUT TOMORROW AT MY 1 WEEK CHECK-UP. GOOD LUCK TO YOU. LADONNA

A G tube goes directly into the stomach. A NG (naso-gastral) tube goes up through your nose and down your esophagus. Although I've never had a G tube (I had an NG tube when I had my gall bladder removed), it would seem logical that there would be a need to keep the area clean -- not only the tube, but the skin that surrounds it, as well. Thank you all for the answers about the tubes. I go for my pretesting on Wednesday. I'm sure I'll find a lot out then.

surgical weightloss post ops are never suppose to have NG tubes after sugery since there's a rish of tearing the suture line of the new stomach that's why some surgeons suggest a medical id bracelet after weightloss surgery just in case of an accident
