Hi.. Has anyone here had their surgery postponed due to failure to lose the required weight? I need to lose about 6 more pounds before March 15th. I am very worried they will cancel my surgery date if I don't. My Dr is very strict about weight guidelines. I think this is playing a big part with my off the wall emotions. Debbie The Shy One

I don't understand this losing weight before surger thing. My surgeon is not requiring it...but I am at the low BMI end...but even if patients are 50 or 60 BMI. the reason for the surgery is that they have been unsucessful at losing weight...it is what brought them to this point, so how can the surgeon put such a constraint on a patient? I don't understand this.

Debbie, my surgery is March 15, Ive been on the surgeons diet for a week & have lost--I hear rhat when u loose weight the liver looses weight first & thats what the Dr. wants for Lap. If the liver is big it gets in the way & surgery could take longer.. I can stay on this diet for 2 weeks but after that the old cravings take over. Good Luck Linda N.

Drink lots of water!! My surgeon would cancel me if I didn't lose the required weight because your liver is in front of your stomach, and if you don't shrink the liver(which holds fat) it makes it harder to do the surgery. I think some also do it to see if you can stay committed. I was told if I didn't lose 10-15 lbs mine would be cancelled. I did lose 12. but I dieted hard and worked out 30 minutes every night and drank water like crazy. I kept my diet to 1200 calories a day per the nutritionist I had to see. Good Luck ! YOU CAN DO IT !!! Julie

Debbie, Below is the diet my surgeon had me on 10 day prior to surgery. I lost 8 pounds the first 7 days and 9 pounds the last 3 days, for a total preop weight loss of 17 lbs. Sometimes on the times Lunch and dinner items in the first part I'd separate the two things I could have by about an hour. Same intake but didn't feel stuffed then deprived. Debbie since you have about a week left I'd do 3 days of the first part and 3 days of the second. Hope this helps! Days 1 - 7 Brkfst - Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast (SFCIB)* Mid AM - Protein Bar Lunch - SFCIB* plus 1/2 small salad or 1/2 Lo fat Sandwich** Mid PM - Protein Bar Dinner - SFCIB* plus 1/2 small salad or 1/2 Lo fat Sandwich** After Dinner - SFCIB* *Unlimited Diet soft drinks, unsweetened tea ( artificial sweetener OK)coffee *Drink 64 oz of water daily Days 8-9-10 Bkfst: SFCIB* Mid-AM 1 cup broth Lunch: SFCIB* Mid-PM 1 cup broth Dinner: SFCIB* After Dinner: SFCIB* *take a mulitivitamin with Iron daily. *Mix SFCIB with 1/3 cup of Carnation Dry Skim Milk and 8 oz of skim or 1% Milk You can substitute any of the SFCIB with the High Protein Drink Mix of your choice if you are trying them out before surgery. ** ½ salad is about one cup I put lettuce, carrots, a tablespoon of cheddar cheese, and some croutons for some more crunch, and lowfat dressing. ½ a lowfat sandwich is 1 piece of bread, one slice of lowfat cheese, one slice of turkey or chicken sandwich meat, and any condiment without sugar or fat. That left me with MUSTARD!! It's surprising just how satisfying the salad and sandwich really are on this diet.
