Chewing gum and breath
Sally - I had a problem with ketosis while on Atkins and there are a couple of tricks I used over time. Generally though you will be dealing with it for a long time, and these are temporary fixes...
1) Kimmer said her doc said no gum...in case you swallow it, you'll have to get scoped. I don't swallow my gum except maybe it happened a couple of times, but it's good advice.
2) The little breath strips, sugar free mints or tic-tacs are good. You can also use a little mint extract dabbed on your finger and swiped over your tongue. Strong, but it works. It's better than real sugar mints because those can sour and make things worse as far as taste in your mouth.
3) This should list as #1, but drinking lots of liquids. Water does something odd to me while on ketosis, and it makes me feel like my mouth is too dry. So if you want to have something with flavor like Sugar free Koolaid or Crystal Light, it might help with that mouth feel.
4) Obviously brushing the teeth helps, but you can't do that 24/7 either.
5) A cracker. Maybe just a bite of cracker once in a while when it is super persistent wouldn't be a problem. Having a little something in the carb family (like crackers) tends to take the edge off the keto-breath.
6) Be prepared for tarter. You will get LOTS of it. I have a tooth scraper and I use it all the time when in ketosis. This stuff builds up on an almost daily basis. Keeping it clean will help keep the ketobugs under better control too.
Hope this helped...
Dina ---who has "done" ketobreath since she started dieting 23 years ago when she was 14...
my nutrutionist told me gum was a no-no. she said that i could swallow it and it could cause a blockage and would have to be removed. she also said that it makes you swallow more air which could make your new, smaller pouch uncomfortable. i guess like what they say about carbonation. this is going to be harder than giving up my big portions of food because i constantly chew gum! i haven't heard about the ketosis. is that with all the surgeries? maybe, if you get enough carbs in, you won't go into ketosis. my doctor didn't mention that. i will have to see about it. the nutritionist said that i should use the breath strips that dissolve on your tongue if i need fresh breath. take care!
Tara - I can vouch for ketosis. It will most certainly happen. But the thing is, you don't want to take in all those carbs and not be able to take in the protein. Best to do the protein first and just have a cracker on occasion when you feel it's worst. In order to avoid ketosis completely you would have to eat too many calories worth of carbs in a day. Even regular low-fat dieters can go into ketosis if their daily calorie level is low enough.
Dina -----just call me KetoQueen. Or Queen of Halitosis de Ketosis! Hey - I like that better than dungeon master.....
No gum or mints at the hospital at least. My doc said no breath mints and no toothbrushing for 36 hours.
When I have done Atkins with ketosis, I used the breath strips because they did not have carbs or calories. Should be OK later. My doc says his intention is to keep me out of ketosis. I have no idea whether he has a sound reason for that or if it is just another case of MD Atkins paranoia. I reserve judgement on it for now...
