I have been a smoker since age 14. I once quit for 5 years and went back for 2 then quit for 10 and went back for a while. I have been smoking for the last year and a half but stopped 2 weeks ago to prepare for my PFT and surgery. I'm scheduled for surgery on March 18th and figured that I need to be in as good a shape as possible. Whenever I have the urge for a smoke I just tell myself that if I wait a while the urge will go away. I also tell myself that if I light up then the urge will recur even more often. It's not easy, but if I can do it - you can too. Good luck.

I wish I could offer you some help. I quit 15 years ago and have been afraid to have even have one puff since. The only thing I can say to you is just do your best to stop now. What I've heard is that if you smoke, it will be really nasty after surgery when you have to cough, and I think they make you cough. My surgeon requires no smoking for one month prior to surgery and he checks the ABGs for compliance. Maybe you should try the gum or the patch between now and then. I wish you the best of luck. I'm having fits too. My hubby is me, but in a loving way. Then yesterday I come down with cooties centered in my chest and coughing so I'm going easy on the smokes. Then Rob goes and says they check ABG.... now I'm skeert! I go for my pre-ops on the 11th I told my hubby that I'm dealing with a lot learning how to 'say goodbye' to food and I can't hang with the 'goodbye smokes' thing too. Gayle Queen of Yarn Balls

Im a smoker... I tried to use the patch but i got these terrible vivid nightmares which I'm told is normal. I also had terrible headaches from the patch. I tried the gum, but YUCK. The best thing I found is drinking water. I know it sounds too simple but every time I want a smoke I drink water. But it's hard, especially around other smokers.

Mary, I will be in prayer for you...gurl I know that it is not easy. I quit on Feb 29, 2004. I was told by my 16 year old...Momma you would be able to say that you haven't smoked for a year for four more years...yep...its leap year. Anyway, I has not been easy and my family is carrying the brunt of it. I am getting better though. I have had 2 cigs since I quit but I pray that the Lord give me strentgh and go from there. I am sure that you will do just fine. & Shannon The Irish Lassie 3/17/04 My 's Adasha Knight & Linda Jones
