I just saw the orders from my surgeon and she ordered a bariatric bed at the hospital. I know some of you worked in hospitals, so just what is that? How is it helpful or different from regular hospital beds?

I do not have a hospital background but I think that the bariatric beds are wider and have a different settings on them for positioning and matress comfort. I know that my bed was more spacious this time than the last time i was in the hospital. Those are made for skinny people.

Um...it costs more? (This isn't your riddle for the day, is it? ) Got me. Never heard of one. Try to google it and see what you get. Kimmer Queen of the Niners, Instigator to All Marchers, High Priestess of Giggles Zero-minus 4 and 10.40 workhours to go!

I know that the bed is much bigger and I believe it goes into all different positions. One of which will bring you right into a sitting position so you can get off the bed easily. Other than that I don't know much more about them... Kelley 7 days and a wake up

I went to a seminar on wls locally and the doctor explained the beds were bigger, but they were designed to hold a higher weight. The hospital in my town is only allowing bariatric patients up to 400 lbs because their beds aren't equipped for higher at this time. So the question comes up in my mind: What do they do with patients who are 600 lbs who have something else wrong??? Dina ----thinking this bed thing is just a glorified birthing bed....

A nurse who was teaching an information class that I went to said that a Bariatric Bed is one that is bigger and holds more weight. She also said that it will have special settings and buttons on it so that it will go from a laying position to a sitting position with just one touch. Its supposed to make it easier for WLS patients to get up and move around. The hospital that Im going to be at doesn't have them yet, but they plan on it very soon. Sally, let me know if your Bariatric Bed is anything like this... Tomorrow's the BIG day! Jenny

Hi Sally! The only thing I have to add to what everybody else said (they are all correct) is that the beds (not all but most) can also go from lying to standing position. They will actually raise you up completely so that the foot board of the bed is on the floor and all you have to do is step off the foot board and onto the floor. They are much more comfortable for MO patients and I would be thanking my Dr. for ordering it. However, not all hospitals have them. God Bless! Man, I need one of those for home...with an ejector button that pushes you OUT of the bed when it hits the upright position. It'd really help with me getting out of bed every morning - my fibro delays me about 1/2 hour from the time I wake up 'til the time I can actually maneuver out of my bed with the least amount of pain...sux... Gosh! I barely weigh 200 so I don't think I need all that much help from the bed...but sounds like it will be much nicer to sleep in....glad I am having it! No, Kimmer, it isn't a riddle...but I DID post a doosie today...I see no one is guessing yet.

What they said is true. The biggest advantage is the assist in and out of bed. However, my understanding is that they are not as comfortable to sleep in (probably because of all the mechanics). My hospital does not use them for under 300 lbs. I did get the frame work and trapeze to help move myself around. I'll miss that at home! Joy
