Bariatric Bed??
I went to a seminar on wls locally and the doctor explained the beds were bigger, but they were designed to hold a higher weight. The hospital in my town is only allowing bariatric patients up to 400 lbs because their beds aren't equipped for higher at this time.
So the question comes up in my mind: What do they do with patients who are 600 lbs who have something else wrong???
Dina ----thinking this bed thing is just a glorified birthing bed....
A nurse who was teaching an information class that I went to said that a Bariatric Bed is one that is bigger and holds more weight. She also said that it will have special settings and buttons on it so that it will go from a laying position to a sitting position with just one touch. Its supposed to make it easier for WLS patients to get up and move around. The hospital that Im going to be at doesn't have them yet, but they plan on it very soon. Sally, let me know if your Bariatric Bed is anything like this...

Hi Sally!
The only thing I have to add to what everybody else said (they are all correct) is that the beds (not all but most) can also go from lying to standing position. They will actually raise you up completely so that the foot board of the bed is on the floor and all you have to do is step off the foot board and onto the floor. They are much more comfortable for MO patients and I would be thanking my Dr. for ordering it. However, not all hospitals have them. God Bless!

Man, I need one of those for home...with an ejector button that pushes you OUT of the bed when it hits the upright position.
It'd really help with me getting out of bed every morning - my fibro delays me about 1/2 hour from the time I wake up 'til the time I can actually maneuver out of my bed with the least amount of pain...sux...

Zero-minus-3 and ONLY 7.23 workhours to go! YIPPEE!!
What they said is true. The biggest advantage is the assist in and out of bed. However, my understanding is that they are not as comfortable to sleep in (probably because of all the mechanics). My hospital does not use them for under 300 lbs. I did get the frame work and trapeze to help move myself around. I'll miss that at home!
