Hi fellow Marchers. Your caboose has a question. I've seen people talking about strictures on the main message board from time to time. I know the definition of a stricture but don't exactly know what they're talking about in relation to this surgery. Can someone explain this to me please? Thanks Rob - Caboose T-28 and counting!

Nope. Did you try the library? wait, isn't that when your tiny hole has closed up on you and food cannot get through?

Yes, basically I think that's what it is. I was just wondering what causes them. I guess they're unavoidable. In a sense it's from too much healing. They don't happen to everyone though so that's good. Shalom for now - Caboose.

I could be wrong (me?) but if I remember correctly they are scar tissue. The tissue starts to heal and sort of shrink a bit, that's where food isn't allowed through. At least that's how the doc 'splained things to me when my dad had surgery. Do me a favor though and double check. Don't take my word for gospel! Gayle Queen of Yarn Balls Resident B**** March 22nd

This is what I found... A stricture is a narrowing of the stoma (opening from the pouch into the intestine) Usually they occur around 3 weeks due to the fact that they 'over-healed' from surgery. They can, however, occur at other times. They occur in 6% or less of WLS. They commonly make you vomit, but not always. Hope that helps... Kelley 8 days and a wake up

Thanks Kelly, I guess they can be pretty bad, often requiring re-hospitalization. Good night - Caboose T-28 and a wake up

I remember being told it can be corrected by endoscopy. They stretch it.

Strictures are a very common complication of the surgery as far as I have heard it. It is a narrowing of the stoma and it requires a day procedure where they knock you out and just blow it back up with a balloon to stretch it out. You are only in the hospital for a few hours. Good Luck! Sam
