Pre-Op Diets.... thoughts please.

OMG I'm just full of ??? today! I have two friends who have had the surgery. One asks if I've started my pre-op diet to get used to the smaller portions and stuff. The other (I met her through here) says live it up and eat what I want. My thought is that I've been on and off diets (haven't we all?) for what seems like forever. I don't see a real reason to try to lose weight before my surgery. I know that I'm not always right so I thought I'd ask some others.... the Marchers. Comments, Ladies and Gentlemen? (oh and the occaisional nut too!)

My nutritionist told me that I had no restrictions. However, she advised that I start practicing by SLOWING DOWN. She said to put my fork down between bites and chew every bit at least 25 chews. My surgeon does not put his patients on a "pre-op" diet. I can eat anything I want up until midnight before my surgery. Rob - the caboose.

One more thing I'm trying to do is not to drink with my meals. I'm trying to get used to not drinking 30 minutes before and after eating.

I say live it up. I dont think that whole prepare for surgery stuff makes any sense anyway. I agree with Rob. If you need to drink with meals i would practice not drinking. Have fun, we will never go to an all you can eat again and eat our heart outs. Good luck to you. LaDonna 3/2 still need a offishal title

Hey Gayle, My doc REQUIRES a very strict pre-op diet, I'm currently in day 7 of said pre-op diet. But every surgeon is different, so if in doubt call the surgeons staff and ask questions. They'll keep you straight! Happy thoughts, Va 5 sunrises until my new life begins Offishal Paper Monkey and Secretary Extraordinaire My Angels ==> Whitney Lori My Angelettes ==> Whitney H & Lori A

My doctor gave me a guideline of how to structure what I eat. It's really not a whole lot different from the way I was eating before (minus the occasional binge). I actually got some things back that I had been not eating and that has made things much easier. I have been adding supplemental protein now to build up. My doctor's program includes 100 grams of supplemental protein AFTER surgery even once I am on regular food, so I need to practice that. I keep thinking there are a few things that I want to eat before my surgery but I really hate the idea of having to put them on my food diary that I turn into him. LOL. I am waiting until I see him next Thursday for my pre op, and I will ask about my pizza and beer. Of course if he says NO WAY, I am going to be a cranky Mo. Well, my doc says that I can eat what I want but that the last real 'binge' will be Saturday because I'm on clear fluids and a laxative on Sunday for surgery on Monday. Boy and I thought this stuff would be pretty much standardized!

My surgeon does not require me to diet pre-op, just eat a smaller dinner the night before, nothing after midnight. I think I would PREFER to be on a liquid diet, at least for a day or two before surgery. He doesn't require the phosphate shake either, but although I think there may be some good to going that route I think I'd rather just stick to making sure there are no solids in the works.... So, I'm kind of playing it by ear. I'm "Living it up"? by "enjoying"? some 'last meals' with friends... worthless things like buffalo wings, and some beer on the Saturday night before (My surgery is on a Tuesday). On Sunday and Monday I'm going to go full-on, liquid Puritan. ps- I have protein samples and stuff that I have to try in the next few days so I will be smattering some liquid meals in the works.

Follow the instructions set by your surgeon. Each surgeon has a different protocol on this one. I for one have not been given a preop diet as of yet. (I hope I don't) However, my Angel, Va, has been given one that she had to start 10 days preop (by the way, how are you doing on that Mommy ?)
