After Kimmer mentioned she is taking 6 weeks, I decided to "rethink" my time off. I am taking 2 full weeks and have decided to take 1/2 days the 3rd week...and see how I feel. I would like to know from other working people (away from the home) how long they expect to be gone.

Hi Sally, I actually work in my home but I do daycare here. I am closing it for 2 1/2 weeks and then having help for a couple of weeks after. I do know that my Dr. said though that if you have a "light" job (desk?) that you could probably go back in two weeks but if you had a where standing, lifting etc. was required that it would take six weeks before you were ready to go back. That's just my Dr. though. Hope that helps. Day care is NOT a light job. You'd better ask how long before you can lift the weight you have to lift ... Joy

Hey, 'Puter Geek... I've been GIVEN 6 weeks off per surgeon's request...but that's just a "preliminary" guess. I have pretty severe fibromyalgia, and we ALL highly suspect that the surgery is going to catapult me into The Mother Of All Flare-Ups post-op. That will probably delay my return to work, but that's ME, I have "mitigating cir****tances". And then again, I've been praying so hard that it DOESN'T happen, that I may return in 6 weeks as planned. I'm also going to be switching positions and returning to a more physical job (versus my current administrative position), and my surgeon will NOT allow anyone to mess up his "art" and return to anything physical BEFORE 6 weeks. Gotta love that guy! The 'standard' that I've heard, read and been told by two surgeons, my nutritionist, my PCP and several post-ops is that at the 4 week mark, fatigue kicks in BIG time. You may want to consider that, too...I've been told by too many people to guffaw it... Anyhoo, my case will probably differ from others. This evil fibromyalgia has me on the verge of medical retirement (for real) and I'm gonna fight it all the way, kicking and screaming! My surgeon told me to plan on 2 to 4 weeks. I put in for 3 weeks at work but can take longer if I need to. I'm having lap so mine may be quicker than those having open. Rob - The caboose.

8 weeks. I'm going open and I also have diabetes which has been pushing me into some pretty nasty hypoglycemia lately, so I planned for the worst and hope for the *******so, I have to travel to Mexico, so that eats up a little time in the beginning. Dina ----who is hoping and praying for absolutely NO complications since she won't have her surgeon close-by and will end up paying out of pocket locally if anything goes wrong.

Mine is open RNY and the normal time is 6 weeks. I wanted to add some vacation time to mine as I have been with the company so long that I can be out on medical leave for 15 weeks at 100% pay but the Dr will not allow it. It said he would only allow what was medicallynecessary. My pcp did say he would help me start back with1/2 days as I have an hours drive to work one way if I needed it. At the moment I am trying to stretch it to 7 weeks.

Looks like I'm the lucky one! I don't have to go back to work. Period. My job has been filled although at my request. See, I get SSI and California Medi-Cal (Medicaid in other states.) I have been on one list or another since August of '02. Then my hubby and I decided to buy a house in Arizona so he could be closer to the Solar Power Industry. Then I get a date! If I move now I start ALL OVER AGAIN. Nope ain't happenin'! I may be crazy but not insane, anyway, I told my boss that I would be having surgery in March and then moving to Arizona during my recovery. He offered to have someone take over my job now so that I can have time to do all the stuff that comes with a major move. I service Rite Aid store for their photo albums and picture frames. They have a job waiting for me when I get settled in Arizona and have recovered as much as I want. Nice huh? I mean the $$$$ would be nice to have but the energy and time to get this move done is coming in handier.
