Marchers -- As we've seen, everyone's aftercare (and pre-op care, for that matter) is as different as are our surgeons. I'm curious as to how many carbs everyone was told to 'keep to' after surgery? Gimme numbers if'n ya would... Kimmer Carb Curious Zero-minus-12 and 6 work days to go!

Hi Kimmer, I don't have a carb limit. I was given a protein goal of 50-60 grams daily. I was told, eat the protein first, then the green veges (non starchy), then, if I still wanted more, eat the rice, potatoes, bread, etc. last. The nutritionist said, if I eat slowly and chew, chew, chew, by the time I get past the veges, my ability to eat carbs will be minimal. However, my doctor's nutritionist stresses eating a variety of foods from each food group each day. The only thing I'm supposed to count though, are the grams of protein. Your caboose.

I don't have a number either, but I was told that at least half of my calories need to come from protein and that no more than 25% of my calories should come from fat. So that means, after I get in my 60 - 100 grams of protein, that leaves 30 - 50 gms of carbs. He wanted us to stick to those on the low glycemic end (whole grain, high fiber foods which won't cause a spike in insulin). Knowing my tendency to OD on carbs, I will try very hard to stay at the low end of the range of carbs and the high end of the protein. But everyone is different... Joy

Hi Kimmer, I don't have a specific number on carbs either. I haven't actually had my preop yet so don't know what my Dr. specifies for sure. However, he does have a book that he has us all buy and in that it says 50-60 of protein and even better if it's in the 80's range. It also said to get my calories from proteins first and then the other stuff. It says in there not to eat things with more than 3 for sugar because it may cause dumping. This book is supposed to be our bible for our WLS with our Doc. I have my preop tomorrow so I will see what he says. Good question to ask. I'm nervous about my preop. Afraid they will find something that will stop or delay my surgery. Talk to ya laters!!! I had a friend bring to me at work today the diet for the first couple of weeks after surgery. It is liquids and light soft goods. The total grams per day for the first 2 weeks are 52-78. I am to have 4-6 ox of liquid every hour for the first 2 weeks. I am to have pure jiuce, fat free clear broth or strained soups, sf jello, sf popciciles and non-caloric drinks. (1 cup per day as it does not have the nutrients.) Then after 2 weeks can add soupy cereals, grits, oatmeal or cream of wheat, fat free milk, broth or cream soups, sg pudding, custard jello, juice and popcicles. I will post the sample daliy menu as a topic.

Thanks, my Sugarplum, Martha!! I read your menu - VERY similar to mine. Pretty grim, but from what my post-op friends tell me, it won't much matter to me for those first 2 weeks anyway. They say they didn't have an appetite at all. WAY post-op, I'm going to be eating MORE than I do on an average day now. My mom and one of my post-op co-workers pointed that out to me. Go figure...gettin' gutted to lose weight only to have to EAT MORE to do so (I'm a terrible eater). It could only happen to me... I don't have a # of carbs either, but the same deal as Rob .. protein first then greens then carbs. My goal is to have 60 or grams of protein through meals, and a supplemental 100 grams of protein through shakes/bars daily per the doc's instructions. ( I have already said before he has a different spin on it .. insisting on the supplemental protein even after ..to re-adjust body composition and build muscle mass). I might know more next week after I see him for pre op. Will let you know then. Hugs, Mo doin' the 24 days and a wake up happy Mo dance p.s. you missed the dance of the 7 veils .. I was entertaining myself last night in the chat room before anyone came in and did the WHOLE dance

I haven't talked in person with my surgeon yet, but I just have gleaned from others. From my long-term love-affair with Atkins (after all, it enabled me to get pregnant....who can't not love a diet that helps you claw your way out of infertility?), I stand by my grand claim that carbs are EVIL. Pure EVIL! Yet....I eat them.....OBVIOUSLY. And before someone lectures me on how the body needs carbs and all that blah blah blah, I'm just making light of my fondness for low-carbing. I don't really think all carbs are evil, but I do believe some *certain* kinds of carbs are (like pure sugars, refined sugars and starches and such). I will probably follow something very similar to Atkins (without the fresh bowls of grease) as I lose. I read somewhere that one surgeon gave a target of staying under 30 grams of carbs a day. That's a lot of carbs when you consider you are to eat protein first. And having done Atkins for so long, I know that garners you way more veggies than you could possibly eat with that new pouch! (That would be akin to 6 cups of cauliflower, half of which is fiber.) For my carbs, I will probably have sandwiches with low-carb bread (it's everywhere now) and do low-carb veggies as my staple with a few potatoes and peas thrown in here and there a couple times a week. I do have a feeling the first few weeks it's going to be potato soup to the rescue though! LOL! Oh - and I'm somewhat of a carb know-it-all if you want to know what the carb count on something is. If I don't know if off the top of my head (usually do) I have the answers usually at my fingertips. Dina ---dusting off the ol' carb calculator

Hey Queenie, After surgery I was told 20 carbs and 85 protein... but every surgeon is different... This wasn't immediately after either.. 1st 2 weeks they weren't too concerned with...
