FIRST WEEKERS - Measurements
First a reminder. Everyone needs to take before pictures and measurements. We all will get discouraged later and need to be able to remind ourselves of how far we have come. It will take a while for our self image to catch up with reality.
Secondly. I'm curious. What are you measuring? When people say they have lost 40", obviously they are adding together recuctions from various measurements.
Is there a standard set of measurements?
I was thinking
neck, bust (aka chest, gents), waist, hips, thigh, arm, ankle
Does that sound right? If you lose an inch in each measurement you would lose 7"? Just wondered what you were thinking....
Joy
Joy I' m not a 1st weeker but I got two cents and want to put it some where. I was talking to a bunch of post-ops and at least 6 of them really regretted not taking their measurements and pictures every month. This was at the last support meeting and we were asking what they wish they had done if they knew what they know now. 6 out of 10 I plan on keeping records and yes your set of measurements sounds right I might add calf for those of us who have problems in that area. I would add them up for a total too. I think thats about 4 cents worth Got any change I only have a nickel????

Hey Joy,
Thank you dear for the reminder. All this stuff to do and so little time...and I know I'd be mad at myself if I forgot to do it!!
Joy always the practical one!!!

When my sister worked at a weight loss center this is all the things they used to measure. It helped a lot of people realize even though they might not have lost any weight, for that week they were still loosing inches. I know it helped whenever you hit a plateau. Hope this helps.

Wow! That is 34 measurements! No wonder gyms can guarantee that you will lose 10" in a short period! Do you think my feet will get shorter?
I think I will pick and choose from this list to get a list of areas that I am particularly interested in.
First weekers, whatever list you use, do it preop and regularly at some predetermined frequency, along with weight and pictures. I suggest you make a private album/scrap book for your accomplishments.
Thanks to everyone for the ideas!

Hi Joy!
The only thing I have to add to these and the calf addition is your wrist and ankles. I know a lot of people have problems there too so I would measure those also. I have a post surgery friend who is going to help me with my measurements tomorrow night at my support group meeting. I'll let you know what all we measure.

One lady from another board has been so dilligent with pics and measurements.. One view she always includes is her back..In her words it was to watch her "back boobs" shrink.. and they are now gone....
She's about 8 months out and has lost so much.. She says things like "I lost almost 2 feet from my hips!!!"
Just a thought for the pics... not that everyone has back boobs and I am not telling if I do..
My 2 cents is this: However you measure, whether you try to do it yourself...which is hard...or have someone else do it, do it the SAME way each time.....for accuracy. For instance you should really hold the tape at an angle across the thighs but some do and some don't...just make sure you have a measurer that can assist you throughout the whole year.
