I have been wondering about the whole canary thing for awhile now and FINALLY went all the way back and found the post.. MAN you guys talk alot.. thought I was going to need a nap to get thru all of those pages and flipping!!!! Having lived in WV for many yrs I should have known this one.. DUH to me.. I did a copy and paste.. probably illegally but I know I am not the only one wondering about the Canary ..... March 1st Canaries - READ THIS PLEASE Original Post by Joy Cook at 10:03 AM PST on 02/15/2004 Little Rock, AR - RNY (03/01/2004) A bit of history for those who need a "canary refresher course"... By the early sixteenth Century, canaries became prized as pets for their near constant melodious song (yeah, that would be me--NOT ). In the nineteenth century, when coal mining became widespread, mining accidents, usually due to explosions of methane gas emitted by the coal, also became commonplace. The canary was found to be highly sensitive to the odorless, colorless gas, and when they stopped singing or fell off their perch, miners knew the gas level was too high and it was time to vacate the area. Many a miner has the humble canary to thank for saving his life. The miners talked to the canaries through the day as they worked and developed a strong bond with them. The little canary, joyful to see the sun and fresh air, would begin singing when brought out of the mine at lunchtime. And the miners were soon competing to see who had the best canary. We, the March First-ers, as beloved canaries of this band of Marchers, promise to make our way through surgery and promptly sing back to you our truthful status and encouragement post-op. We may be a bit off key for a while, but sing, we will! March Canaries... Please sign in with your agreement to these terms! Joy "Lead Canary" (3/1)

Ahhhh - and there it is! I figured it had something to do with that, but I wasn't getting the connection (March 1st). My curiosity is satiated! Dina --who would rather be a canary than a ten spot.
