They are canceling my surgery

They are canceling my surgery. It was scheduled for Tuesday. I'm a wreck. Yesterday my GI dr called because my iron was low and my sed rate was 90 (should be 20). He said tell the surgeon and see what he says. The surgeon called me and said something like "What was the big deal you knew you were anemic and now I'm getting notes about your anemia and sed rate. Sed rate means nothing to me. Its just a way Drs use to send you to specialist." Now we have to cancel the surgery because we live in a medical legal society and now you have to go thru more test that will show nothing and we have to reschedule." You had an endoscope and colon scope we were all ready and now we have to cancel." I didn't know what to say, I was trying not to cry. I don't know what sed rate is I don't know how important being anemic is. I just passed on to my surgeon what I was told to pass on. I felt like I should have kept my mouth shut. He called my GI and called me back in a completely different tone. They agreed I need to have an upper GI and see a hematologist. He said there was a change we could do it before Tuesday but he didn't think there was time to see a hematologist so the surgery would have to be rescheduled. Its bad enough its being reschuled when I've made plans for a month but to know its being reschelude for CYA purposes......

Oh Robin! I'm sorry you are having these setbacks. Sounds like the surgeon is a bit of a butthole to be placing this on your back like as if you're a whiner or something. Keep us updated and let us know how it goes. Dina

Robin, You will always be a Marcher no matter what your date. You started here and we will wait for you to catch up. Promise!!!! I know you have to be very disappointed to reschedule, but be sure that the doctors are doing this to ensure that your body is ready for this surgery. Hugs, Mo

Oh Robin, I am so sorry sweetie! I know that it has to be hard to have to wait longer to have your surgery but at least it is not "cancelled". That is something to be thankful for. I know though that you must be terribly disappointed to have to postpone it. Keep us posted on what happens and I will be praying for you. Carrie

Hi Robin, My dr explained a sed rate as showing an increase in blood cells that indicate an infection of some type in your body... She also said it is only a starting point.. If it comes back within normal parameters then they stop .. BUT if it's not within the range then they have to investigate and see what's going on... It's not specific enough... I am sure some will disagree but surgeons are a little tunnel visioned and just because he sees this as a CYA situation perhaps it isn't and he was just angry that this has happened when you were so close.. It's a hard pill to swallow.. but when you calm down and start to breathe again I hope you see it would be better to find out what's wrong now and not later when you're post op and very ill.. If they can prevent any problems and get you to surgery in the best possible health than they are obligated to do so... You don't want complications..... This is a DELAY not a cancellation.... You're in my thoughts and prayers... Keep us posted on the findings and soon we'll be celebrating your new date.....

I can only imagine how upset you are. But, anemia does need to be looked at carefully. That means that you do not have enough iron in your blood. It can make you tired and depressed. The issue with it with regards to this surgery is that iron is mostly found in meats and for most of us, it will be a while before we can eat enough meat to really provide adequate iron. Also, it is normal to lose some blood in surgery. The effects of this are harder on you if you are already anemic. Iron and protein work hand in hand to provide the building materials for healing. You really don't want to go into this without knowing anything that might affect your success. Try to look at this as possibly a blessing of WLS that you may have found something that would have been a problem whether or not you have WLS and you can now take care of it. You are in my prayers... Joy

Oh Robin!! {{{{hug}}}} I am so sorry! Dr's sometimes just can't see the forrest for the trees. My sed rate is always high, I've been told that it has something to do with Arthritis but it may be an indicator of other things as well. We are here for you!!!! And will still be here when you are on the losing side with us. Va

Robin , I am so sorry but this is a delay. You will have this surgery and it will go great. The thing about this whole ordeal is... I would think it was the doc who discovered this information to tell the surgeon..not your place. HOWEVER, if there is something they know that can be harmful to you during surgery, it is their job to get it fixed. I do understand your frustration though. You are in my prayers! Bethany
