2 weeks to go and counting!
Well, I went for my final pro-op visit with the surgeon today. I was scared before I got there and now PETRIFIED since I left! She informed me I would have to give myself shots in my stomach daily for first 30 days after surgery at home. She said it is a blood thinner to make sure I do not get blood clots. I DON'T LIKE NEEDLES! This is going to be very hard for me! My husband says he will give them to me if needed, but still..NEEDLES!! She informed me of the various things that could happen and told me she would see me on the 8th. I hope my fingernails hold out that long!
Do you have a previous history of blood clots? Last year, I had clots in the superficial veins in my leg and I had to have 2 shots a day in my stomach for a week. I can't remember the name of the medicine. Anyway, other than the aggravation, the shots don't hurt because the needle is SO tiny. Good luck with your surgery. I will be having mine on 3/1/04. Please keep me in your prayers. Pam

HI Vanessa!!!!
My Dr requires 10 days of shots to prevent clotting and anyone considered at risk has a Greenfield Filter inserted to prevent blood clots..
Aside from infection, clots are one of the biggest problems associated with this surgery and if they can prevent them and keep you safe then I think that's a good thing!!
Now about you being afraid of needles... They say if you hold the skin very tautly and look away you won't even feel it... The needles are very tiny and it's not forever....
You're a WARRIOR or you wouldn't be here.... you'll get past this... and when you're happy and healthy and smaller you'll probably laugh... After all you have seen and read and heard about the surgery the only part that scared you is the needles...
One day you'll tell this to a pre-op who is scared too....
Hugs..... maybe it would help if hubby has to give you a boo boo present everytime he gives you a shot?? Like a foot rub or something??
Vanessa,
You'll do just fine honey!! I have diabetes and had to be on insulin while I was pregnant (I only have to take pills now) -- the first time round I just didn't think I could do it. It took me over 30 minutes to get enough courage to give myself that first shot. Then, once I did it, I realized that it really didn't hurt. A little shot or a blood clot that could cause serious problems??? I'd take the shot!!!
Just keep thinking "I think I can!! I think I can!! I think I can!!"
