Drinking with meals

I tried to break the habit of drinking with meals and found it really hard. As a result I have fallen back into it. This post from the Jan board caught my attention. I'm back to working on that behavior change. The trick seems to be drinking a lot up to 30 min before the meal (which I usually forget to do)... Here is the thread from the Jan board: ------------------------------------------------- I'm so thirsty... Original Post by Shelly T at 3:09 PM PST on 02/18/2004 Cedar Rapids, IA - RNY (01/27/2004) ...right after meals! This not drinking with meals is killing me. I'm following the rules but that's one I hate! -------------------------------------------------- RE: I'm so thirsty Response from Jan Johnston at 4:32 PM PST on 02/18/2004 Galveston, TX - RNY (01/16/2004) I know Shelly.. I start fixing something to eat.. and then realize that there is no use fixing something to drink.. slowly but surely I'm getting used to it.. but it is really hard I totally agree.. this whole thing requires changing everything.. but it changes you too.. That has been the hardest part to change after my surgery. I understand why we have to do it - but it certainly doesn't make it any easier to deal with. Good luck! Barbie I figure any behaviors / habits we can modify before surgery will make it easier afterwards, so I am back to working on this one! Joy (3/1)

Hi Joy, Thanks for bringing this up. I have really been working on getting my water intake up to at LEAST 64 oz. a day. While I haven't totally eliminated drinking with my meals, I have gotten down to just a few sips. I do have problems waiting 30 minutes after I am done tho before having something to drink, but I am learning The hardest for me will be coffee with breakfast. Even though my coffee is decaf and has been for years, it's still my 'wake up'. Hugs, Mo (doing a happy Mo dance )

For me it will be decaf coffee 1/2 hr BEFORE breakfast... We have our priorities!!! (My doc says to wait 1 1/2 hour after eating before drinking once we are on solid food. If it is salty, that will be tough!!!) Joy

Thanks for the repost. I never thought it would be a big deal, but I guess the proof is in the pudding, so I should try starting now. I don't actually drink a lot while eating, but it's always there on the table if I want it. Think I'll start now doing this. Good advice. Dina

Yup...my nutritionist warned me 'bout this. Said I couldn't have anything to drink a half hour before or a half hour AFTER a meal. Since she'd already said it should take a half hour to eat one oz DURING the meal, I said "Whoa...so you mean it's gonna take me AN HOUR just to get an ounce of any meal down?" She laughed and said "Yup. Sux, don't it?" I found that I seldom drink with my meals anyway...unless it's milk. So I'm not having a problem with this part. However, my surgeon, nutritionist and shrink ALL said to practice CHEWING now so when I hit the solid food stage, I'll be ready. THAT has been challenging....to chew chew chew 'til it's chewed down to a near-pureed consistency, THEN swallow. I'm GETTING it, but I'm not 'there' yet (and this has been over a good amount of time I've been practicing...). I never realized how much of my food I swallowed darned-near whole 'til I started practicing chewing. Cheez!
