Hi Sandy,
I think we're all excited AND nervous about our upcoming surgeries, but since on this particular board we're all pre-op and scheduled in March, you might want to try looking in on a message board from December or January. They'll be post-op there and could tell you more definitively what to expect.
But please stick around here as well. There are lots of very friendly, informative people here.
I'm scheduled for March 2nd too! The thrill that this long, uphill struggle is soon going to be over is far outweighing any nerves about the procedure. I'm sure, too, that in one of these posts there is a book list for informative reading and research. Dig in, and welcome!
Love,
Katarina
Hey! I'm a March 2, baby also! I am finally getting a bit anxious, after meeting with the dietician last week. I'm still so excited, though, at the thought of my clothes becoming baggy! I can't wait! I'm looking forward to the summer and being able to spend more time outdoors doing the things I used to enjoy doing. We must remain positive as the benefits will GREATLY outweigh the negatives. The healing time will go very quickly, I'm sure. We'll then be experiencing such an emotional "high" from the weight loss, it will most certainly drown out the negatives associated with the recuperative period. Hang in there!

Sandie,
Here's a suggestion. Go back to the Sept 2003 board and click on a name to look at their profile. Many people have kept a journal. Reading profiles has helped me more than anything else. Also go to your state board or doctors board and check profiles. It won't all be cheery, but it is real, and the overwhelming report after several months is "Thank God I did this!"
Many feel that way from the very first, but most do by the second month. Glad to have you as a first weeker!

Hey Sandie,

You might check here:

for Support Group info, but that board doesn't look any where near as active as this one.
A friend of mine had the Lap RnY yesterday. I went to see her this afternoon. She was doing pretty well, still in a bit of pain, but was pretty well controlled with meds. She said herself though, that she's a wimp when it comes to pain and takes whatever they'll give her. She drank out of a 1 ounce cup almost constantly while I was there. They told her to drink the 1 ounce at least every 15 minutes. She was sticking pretty much to the broth and tea, they had given her some watery apple juice but had been told some dumping horror stories and didn't want to chance it while she was still wearing the pressure booties. Bathroom breaks take some sophisticated orchestration when your still wearing the booties. She was in great spirits.
Keep a positive attitude and if possible find a buddy locally to compare and encourage one another. If you can't find it locally, we'll still be here and we will try to keep your spirits up.
Happy thoughts,
Va

Sandie,
It's in my nature to analyze the hell out of everything. I've probably posted here that I researched the heck out of this surgery before deciding to go after it. I showed up in the rooms of total strangers minutes after they came out of recovery to see how they were doing. (I did e-mail them ahead of time and get their permission.) I've followed people from surgery through 6 or 7 months, meeting them for dinner and lunch, talking on the phone and we've become good friends. (I've got a team of 5 angels.) I've gone to several different support groups that were attended by people in all stages, that had been operated on by all sorts of doctors in all sorts of hospitals ranging from excellent to horrid.
I've heard stories of strictures, frothing, puking, bloating, you name it.
One guy from a group had a lap RNY, got a stricture, they punched through his intestine with the scope, he had to go in for an emergency open repair and he even lived on a portable IV for 3 weeks while everything healed. Another woman is working on her third stricture.
I know these sound like horror stories, but here's the happy part... Not one single person, no matter how much trouble they've had, regrets their decision. Every one of the people who have had problems says that they would do it again in a heart beat. The biggest regret people have had is that they didn't do the surgery sooner. I don't know if this helps you, but it helped me decide that I had made the right choice.
