Christine called me at 8 am this morning to tell me that I rec'd approval for surgery, only 3 days after she faxed my info. to my insurance company! I cannot believe how lucky I am!!!! My surgery is scheduled for March 1st, the day after my birthday and two days after my wedding anniversary. I am excited and happy and plan on going on an all-liquid diet the week prior to surgery. Can anyone give me any advice as to how to prepare myself for surgery? What to bring to the hospital, what to do/not do the day before surgery, and so on? I would really appreciate any positive input from ya'll. Thanks in advance for any and all help! Rita

Hooray! Another March 1-er!!! Welcome to the Marcher board, Christine. I share your March 1 date! You really moved through the process fast! This is a fun group and a great place to pick up info. Look through the posts below and you will pick up a lot of info. We March 1-ers have taken on the term Canaries, because we are going first for the group to test it out and report back. Dear Joy: Thanks for your speedy reply. When my doctor's nurse, Christine, called me yesterday morning, I was both surprised and elated. I can't believe how quickly my insurance carrier, Turft's, approved my surgery! I guess they figured it would be cheaper in the long run for me to have surgery than to keep paying for all my meds. I'll stay in touch!

Another "canary" Welcome to the "Marchers" Congrats on getting a date I can't really give you any advice cause I'm not even sure exactly what I'm supposed to do before surgery. I wasn't required to lose any weight but I decided to lose some anyway...I guess it makes your liver stronger and makes for a faster recovery. So maybe cutting down now and "trying" some of the post op diet requirements may help ya a bit. Your surgeon may have special requirements for the day before your surgery. I know some require bowel prep, maybe liquids for the day and some may just not want you to have anything after midnight. You'd have to check with your surgeon to see what he requires. As far as the hospital stay goes, I would say just the normal necessities, Brush, tooth brush, tooth paste, CHAPSTICK, sock, undies, comfy clothes to come home in, maybe some magazines just in case you get so bored... Sorry I can't be a better help. BUT, I do wish you the best. I hope you have an uneventful surgery, and a SAFE and SPEEDY recovery! Kelley MARCH RULES

Hey, another Canary! Welcome to the "Marchers", Rita! I see that Joy-ful Canary, Chief Canary In Charge, has already welcomed you into her fold with all proper decorum. That's our Joy -- we love her! As for what to bring to the hospital, I'd suggest you read-read-read. A really REALLY good area on this AMOS website is the "Library" - the link is at the top of this page, 2nd link from the right, top row. That's where I learned an AWFUL lot of info that I needed to know, altho at the time I didn't realize I needed to know it...didja follow that? Your surgeon should be giving you your "marching orders" on immediate pre-op things he requires: the one thing I've learned is that every surgeon is different, and their pre-ops and aftercare vary as much as the surgeons themselves do. For instance, Dr. Aguirre operates in Mexico, and the "clear liquid" part of his immediate post-op care is tequila, and the "full liquids" is Kahlua. ~*~I'M KIDDING!!~*~ Nah, really, you need to talk to your surgeon to find out specifics. Some people are on diets for the week(s) before...NOT ME. I plan to eat everything I won't be able to eat for quite awhile so I won't miss it as badly 'til I can eat it again. You may even want to hit your state website or the general national website...there's a lot of good info to be found there, too, and most of them are post-ops sharing their experiences. We "Marchers" haven't been thru it yet, we're still learning, which is why you "Canaries" are REQUIRED to let us know the ins-and-outs as soon as your little fingers can type it out to us! We'll be waiting with baited breath! Anyhoo, welcome, and feel free to cut up with us. Laughter IS the best medicine! And we're good at it!
