CONGRATULATIONS to you all but unfortunately I'm not like you all. I'm a very very slow loser. I've tried just doing the protein drinks and there is no major difference for me. My metobolism is just so different from the world's - LOL.....I get in over 70gms of protein daily.....I drink over 64oz of water daily....I work out for about 1-2 hrs at the gym no less than 5 days a week......and yet I still only lose about 1-2lbs a week and sometimes nothing and then it's like 5lbs in a week.....GO FIGURE BECAUSE I CAN'T - LOL.....I'm trying my best not to compare my results with others because when I do then I get depressed and constantly ask myself why is this surgery not working for me like everyone else......My surgery was March 27, 2003.....My beginning weight was 341.5lbs.....And so far I've lost 49.5lbs in 17 weeks.....I ask myself, Marilyn what else can you do?????.....There is nothing else that I can do because I'm doing it all right now.....I'm just happy that I'm not having any problems from this surgery.....I can eat just about everything that I was eating before but in smaller portions.....Overall, I'm just happy that I am losing weight and not gaining.....I've discovered that this has been an life altering change for me.....I'm eating healthier, I'm exercising, I'm drinking water and I'm taking my vitamins.....I'm just crazy enough to believe that I'm going to win this battle of the bulge with the Lord leading the way!!!!!
Topic: RE: why drink water?
Tammy - you do need fluids to help you loose weight. It flushes the system out. If you can't drink water, try crystal light or something like that. 7-11 has a crystal light slurpee which makes a great treat and also counts as fluids! Be careful that you don't dehydrate! Good luck hun!

Hi Karen. First of all, your weight loss is terrific!! I had surgery on 3/20 and I am down 71lbs, but from my experience I have found that the more protein and water, the more weight loss you will see. That is probably why you are seening a jump when you do the shakes. Always push the protein first!! Then of course water, water, water!! Good luck hun! You're doing great!
Topic: RE: Hair Loss?? Stress??
I am also have major hair loss. My drain clogs daily. My hair is getting thinner and it worries me too. People will tell you to up your protein and vitamins but that really doesn't seem to help. I did the Atkins diet a few years back and lost a lot of hair then too and all I ate was protein and I have always taken major amounts of vitamins (including biotin). So I really believe it is just our bodies' way of coping with the stress of losing all of this weight. I'm sure it will stop or slow down eventually. Nobody on this site really has complained of being bald!

Hi, I had my surgery on 03/24/03. Started at 260, now at 197...63 pounds lost. 58 pounds in 3 months is a similar rate to what I am experiencing. I think there are just so many variations in people that can account for how quickly the weight comes off and that's perfectly normal. Why do some people develop intolerances to certain foods and others don't? Who knows? Our bodies are just different. I find that if I start comparing my weight loss to other people's it can get discouraging because there's always someone who has lost more. I try to compare myself to my former self in various ways. How much did I lose on my last diet and how fast? What year was it the last time I was at this weight? When I can look at my weight going back to levels it was at 4 or 5 or even 10 years ago and think that has happened in just a few months it really amazes me and makes me realize my body has been transforming at a pretty fast pace! I don't weigh myself very often either...once every couple of weeks, generally. It sounds like evryone is doing well, just moving at their own pace. I hope you won't let yourselves get discouraged!

I haven't particularly tried to do what you're doing. My weight loss has been going more slowly. I've lost 63 pounds - down from 260 to 197. It has definitely not been coming off as fast as it was. I am thinking maybe I should try a protein shake once a day...in the morning maybe. I think I would be hungry if I had nothing but shakes. I do get a little hungry if I don't eat at all and shakes are like nothing because they're liquid. My surgeon doesn't really want us using shakes at this point.
One thing I will say to you is that I was told that if I'm a little short of my water and protein goals for the day, get the water in FIRST! It's that important. Especially if you are taking in all that protein you need the water so you don't tax your kidneys and liver.
Congrats on losing so much! It must feel fantastic!

Hi, I had open RNY 3-31-03.. I started out at 412.. Ive lost 92 pounds so far.. But the only way i can lose is : When I eat normal .. meaning just small meals 5 times aday,, which im suppose to eat 6 times aday.. I don't lose weight,, I stay the same..Its like my body is resting,, But when I decide Its time to start losing again.. I start replacing meals with protein shakes.. like 3 meals aday are shakes.. with one meal protein and another main meal being protein and carbs.. I lose like crazy.. last week 13 lbs that week.. Monday will be my 17th week post op.. Ive decided to lose 100 lbs by Wed. i bet i can do it by drinking shakes instead of eating.. I also do water aerobics everyday.. I just think I have a weird body.. anyone else like me? I also have never been able to get all my water in..

I had my surgery on March 10th and have lost about 63 pounds. Much much less than many of my peers. People tell you not to worry but of course you are going to compare and worry its natural. I wish therewas someone out there to help us feel better. Is there a solution to up the weight loss? I drink water, I take my vitamins and I eat no carbs at all. hardly any sugars. I wish i was losing faster. I feel that there are two camps out there. the people losing 70-80 pounds in 4 months and people like us losing 50-60. Honestly guys i wish i was in the other group. I sometimes cringe when i see some women profiles who lost alot more than me 4 months after their surgery. I feel the weight loss window is closing...maybe in a few months. I just feel awful if I went thru this surgery and not much weight comes off..thanks for listening. kris..

Sally, I had my surgery on the 26th sister! I weighed 279 when I went in and am at 211 now. That is 68 pounds. I LIVE on chili beans. For some reason I can't get enough of them. Sugar free Kool ade is AWESOME and the protien drink that I love is the Atkin Advantage Cafe Au Lait. YUMMMMMY! And Chocolate from EAS!! Not as yummy cause I am tired of it! BUT, You sent me a "card" thingy on here and I am glad to hear that you are doing good.

I too had diabetes and now am off of ALL of my meds. Also had HIGH cholesterol and was on Lipitor for that and now I take NOTHING at all. NO MEDS!! I was taking 9 a day and now to only take a vitamin, I feel like I am forgetting something. I started at 279 and today I weigh 211 . At 5'8 1/2 " that leaves me with a BMI of 32. I was at like 46 I think?? I had my surgery on March 26th and am feeling BETTER than EVER. I have to admit, I LOOK GOOD!! No, I am not concieted. But I feel like all of us should feel better about ourselves. We made a life changing decision and should be rewarded for taking control and have better self esteem. I used to stay in the houe caue one day when I was in my front yard doing yard work, someone drove by and yelled "Jenny Craig" at me. OMG!! It was in front of my kids and I was so devastated. NEVER really went out again. Now, I am out and about. You can't keep me home long enough to do yardwork now! Everyone in here should be proud of the decision that they made. You are all the better for it!
