You're right, malabsorption is for life.  However the peak malabsorption period is within the first two years or less.   Nutrient malabsorption differs.  That takes place in the bypassed section so the intestine cannot adapt itself.

Protein bars may be convenient but they arent very filling and the carb and fat content often offset the protein content. I would drop them and seek protein sources from meat. It will fill you and keep you full longer. Deli meats often sit well but you have to eat quite a bit for the protein to add up. Are you logging you food? Do you know how your protein is adding up? I would suggest using fitday.com or the dailyplate.com and see exactly what you averaging each day. Real food will always be more satisfying than shakes or processed bars.

The honeymoon's not over yet.  We can get as much as 18-24 months of good malabsorption.  Exactly how much each person gets and for how for long is immeasurable.

What ends for nearly everyone is the period of fastest weight lost.  Not an issue for me since I've never had fast weight loss to begin with.

Topic: MONTHIVERSARY ELEVEN - IS NOW UPON US - HOW'S EVERYONE DOING?

Hey my Feb 2009ers!

Are you where you expected to be this time last year when we were all still pre ops?  Are you where you want to be today?  Are you content, struggling, regretful, elated, some where in between?

I remain frustrated.  This is all far more complex than I imagined.  I expected to stick to plan and loose the weight.   I knew the old calories in/ calories out formula is nothing but bull **** for those of us that struggle with obesity.  What I did not know pre op was that I have a real metabolic issue that resists weight loss.

In spite of my RNY, in the last five months I've lost just 14 lbs.   In the last two weeks I've been gaining and loosing in a six pound range.  All despite consistently maintaining a calorie deficit that should result in a loss of 2 - 3 lbs per week on average.

Don't get me wrong.  I am greatful for having lost nearly 80% of my excess weight.  However, if decades ago the medical community had identified how complex and difficult weight related issues are for me, then perhaps I would never have become obese at all.   Even now there is no solution to my weight gains.  Doctors, nutritionists, all useless.  I'm just supposed to stick to plan and hope for the best.   It is getting harder and harder not to become discouraged.   I should be done with diets, but I'm searching for a new diet plan that will work for me to get to goal minus five pounds.

The positive, this month when I post my updated pics (I take photos in even numbered months.), I will be wearing a size four.   My largest item of clothing is a size ten dress purchased at six months out.  Everything I've bought this month has been a size four/ small sans one medium sweater.  I plan never to go over a size ten or a medium ever again.

So its the same old story for me but someone must have some good news.  Tell me something good my February 2009 peeps!  Hows everyone doing as we approach eleven months out?
