So far...ok...Surgery was 2/16/09
Hi all! I had lap gastric bypass on 2/16/09. Hosptial stay was fine...I had to stay an extra day because I spiked a fever of 101.5. My O2 sats were also low...90-92% range so I had to keep the oxygen on. I was up walking around fine and was doing my breathing thing. The nurses that weren't mine were shocked to know I had had WLS because I was getting around so well. I had 2 c-sections, a hysterectomy, 4 laproscopic surgeries, and a gall bladder removed previously...this was not as bad. My drain was removed from at the hospital...OUCH! Being a nurse I knew about the take a deep breath and hold it, but WOW...I didn't know it felt like that! Ha ha! Now I do and will be more sensitive! Comes out easy enough though!
Ok...so I'm home now and was planning on going back to work on Monday....yeah perfect world right? I'm rethinking that...Although I have not had any nausea...thank goodness...I do have the gas...been belching as I walk around. I know most of this is from the surgery and is being absorbed. Walking has really helped...
What I don't like much are the protein drinks. It was ok at first. But I'm not much of a sweet person...think loved spicy stuff...pepper contests and such...hmm...I'm tolerating them because i know I need the protein. The strawberry and banana were good...but could not finish them because they just got too sweet for me. The chocolate is doable and so is the Cookies and Cream...that tastes like Cookie Crisp cereal....which was my favorite cereal. I've had some chicken boullion which seems to have been my savior...the saltiness is good. Also, getting my water in by the little Crystal Light packets to add to bottled water...that is very good. I like the Pomegranite Cherry and Fruit Punch. They are sugar free and I can tolerate them in sips. The little medicine cups have worked wonders. I think maybe that is why I haven't gotten nauseous...I will do a medicine cup full and then wait about 10-15 minutes...Seems like I'm constantly drinking though...
I'm on liquids for the 1st 2 weeks, then I go to pureed for 2. Any suggestions on getting protein in without all the sweets would be appreciated! Thanks

I find that I have to half and half my protein shakes with water or they are sickly sweet!
Glad to hear that all went fine overall and that you're doing well. I haven't had any abdominal surgeries before.... no c-sections.... maybe that's why I'm having a fun time with the pain? IDK
I didn't have a drain and was thankful for that after all I've read about it!

We share the same surgery date!! I had my surgery at 8:30 Monday the 16th and by Tuesday night I was going crazy and wanted to go home!! Luckily my temp was good and they let me go home on Wednesday at noon. Sounds like we both did great!! I was up as soon as I could, too.
Didn't use much pain meds and no oxygen. I am greatful. Felt bad for the others who didn't have it so easy as I would wheel by their rooms.
Like you I am getting tired of the protein in powder form real quick!! I was given some sample packets of liquid protein that I have found helpful. Gets in the protein while I drink. I also add unflavored protein to my chicken broth to get in as much protein everywhere I can. Looking forward to the next step in foods.
Gas was funny for me too. I haven't been able to sleep at night. I am downstairs right now and my family sleeps away upstairs. After everyone goes to bed, I am downstairs listening to the rumblings of my stomach gas like a far off storm approaching!! It has gotten much better with the walking and I have had bowl movements now. Another hurdle.
My problem, I just wasn't aware of how high up my scar would be. I haven't attempted a bra yet and am nerveous to do so. I really do need to harness these babies if I want to go out in public. Any help with that.......

There are a few unflavored protien powders that you can buy, I get almost all of my stuff off of www.bariatriceating.com if you wanted to check that out. Congratulations on your surgery! I can't wait to join you on the looser bench on the 25th!
Good Luck!

Yes, I have had a problem sleeping too! I toss and turn, as best as I can...so far my husband hasn't complained (I doubt he would). Another thing is I have been breaking out in sweats terribly! Is this my way of getting rid of water weight? I will be drenched....I've never been much of a sweater. My belly is still bloated out bigger than before surgery so I can't tell if I've really lost any weight. I refuse to weigh myself until my doctors appointments. I don't even own a scale. I never went by weight anyways, I actually used to exercise and no matter how much I would, the weight would kinda stay the same...you know muscle weighs more than fat...
anyways...is anyone else experiencing the sweats??

Glad to hear you are home and doing better. Just get through these two weeks and you will have more choices. I did better with my protein shakes when I made them with one scoup instead of the two they suggest. Of course, I am not getting as much protein, but then I use milk instead of water (more protein) and add some unflavored whey protein I have to get about 30 grams per an 8 oz drink.
