Please Help Me

I had the gastric bypass on the 10th of February and I am not doing well. Before the surgery I could drink the protein drinks and could stand a lot of the supplements now I can not. Whenever I try to drink them I get real nauseated or I vomit. The smells of them are awful. I’ve been taking my medication but I haven’t been doing so well with the vitamins. I don’t know what to do I am scared I made the worst decision of my life and I am going to hurt myself because I can’t seem to do right. Also any ideas on pureed foods I have none.

Thanks

It sounds like a follow-up appointment with your doctor and dietician might be in order.  You can puree chicken and tuna.  I would add a bit of broth or fat free gravy to the chicken to thin it out a bit and some fat free mayo and mustard to the tuna.  I was told I can spice things as I wish, too.  The bariatric nurse suggested I puree an egg w/ fat free mayo and season it like you would egg salad.  Fat free refried beans w/ a bit of fat free sour cream and taco sauce were also suggested.  I will be starting my puree diet Sunday.

So sorry to hear you're struggling!  I agree that you should check in with your surgeon.

In the meantime -  I also had a problem with protein powders etc and found that the only one I could face was Multigenics UltraMeal.

I also think that the "Oh no!!  What have I done?!!!" fears are a very natural part of the process; I had them at about the same time as you and have read countless reports of them from the other folks here on OH,.  The short answer is that you made a decision based on health concerns and it was almost certainly a good decision.  In my case, I answered my own question "What have I done?!!  I've added years to my life and started a course of action that will reduce the pain in my knees and back, let me travel easier, facilitate career growth, reduce fears about breaking or not fitting into furniture, allow me to go to movies and other entertainment events with my friends without having to check whether the seating will accomodate me, etc etc"

As for pureed foods, right now I'm eating a very yummy cheesy potato soup with ham and a *ton* of garlic.  It's all blended up and very satisfying (flavor, texture and taste).  I was told that I could eat anything I could blend up as long as it was <7g of protein and <3 g of fat.

Be of good cheer, Nijua, this too shall pass....but call your surgeon :)

I would call your surgeon or nut and ask them. Maybe you could puree protein powder into something that you're pureeing to drink? That way it's not the shake? I'm finding mine sickly sweet so I've had to half and half it with water to get it down...... would that work for you maybe?

This is another option. It's protein that tastes like fruit juice and there are alot of different flavours that it comes in.

Good luck and please update us as to how you are doing!

yogurt and pureed baked beans (fat free vegitarian) both sit really well for me.  You will feel better with time!

I had surgery on the 10th as well. Before surgery powdered protein shakes were fine but after surgery I could barely get them down. I found that if I mix 1 scoop chocolate Max Protein with a dark Chocolate Royale or Mocha Latte Adkins Advantage premixed shake I can handle it. Taste so much better to me. It takes me about three 4 ounce servings to drink the whole thing. At 37gm of protein for the whole thing...not bad if I drink two whole ones a day. Also try drinking out of a cup with a lid. It helps with the smell. I'm still working on getting all my vitamins in ever day. I do better some days than others. I guess what I'm saying is that you are not alone. You won't be able to do everything perfectly right off the bat. It hasn't even been 2 weeks yet. If you are still concerned and having issues after a few more days I would call your surgeons office and see what they suggest.

On a different note I'm so excited to start pureed foods. I'm thinking egg yolks blended with fat free or low fat mayo and a little mustard.....or tomato sauce over some fat free ricotta baked until warm. Kind of like Lasagna with out the noodles.

Keep us posted on your progress. I hope things get easier for you.

A trick I was told about is to put the shake in a sippy cup or bottle with a sports top.  This way you can drink with out the smell.
