I had a 2 part appointment. The first one was in the evening and it was the manditory information session, the next day I met with a couple of nurses in the surgeon's office to go over what to expect afterwards, my medical history, that kind of thing... then I got to talk to the surgeon with any questions I had. They also had me sign an agreement saying that I understood what we had discussed, that he had told me all of the risks, that I would attend a minimum of 2 support group meetings, and that I wouldn't get pregnant for at least 18 months.

I'm sure when you go to your appointment you will get plenty of paperwork/books to read up on. My doctor has us scheduled for a 3 1/2 hour class with a psychologist, dietician, and a nurse to go over everything in the packet of papers/books in detail. I just had my class this past Wednesday. When you meet with your doctor they will discuss if you are to go on a liquid diet prior to surgery. Definately start writing down questions you are having and bring the list with you to your appointment. Good luck!
When my date was set I started checking out the mesage boards to find the questions I would not otherwise know to ask at the surgeon's office. I'm a full and complete disclosure kind of gal but it may be too much info for you.
If you choose to do this don't let negative experiences phase you. The statistics show complications are far less of an issue than any one post may lead you to believe. Too much info can be as dangerous as too little if it freaks you out.
For me, pre op included a nursing assesment by phone with one of the the hospital's pre op nurses. Telephone registration with hospital admissions. A two week diet designed to prepare the liver for surgery. A four hour education class with a written exam. Paperwork including rights, responsibilities, waivers, disclaimers etc etc as some others already described. And last, a pre-op physical by the surgeon.
My daughter had an endoscopy, registered with admissions and had a five day diet to avoid fatty liver problems.
Hope this helps. Congratulations and good luck!
