Anyone have no special diet pre-op?

I keep reading everyone going on a 2 week pre-op liquid diet. My surgeon doesn't require, or even suggest that. Are there any other folks this month who don't have a special pre-op diet?

I am going to the surgeons tomorrow for a final pre-op meeting, I'll ask him why so many folks seem to be required to do this. Not that I'm complaining, just curious.

I don't have to so a pre-op but i do have to weigh less then I did the last time he weighed me. If I gain it shows my surgeon I've been eating fatty foods and thats not good for the liver. He just wants me to be on a healthy nutritional diet which I learned in Nutrition class.

from what I understand, the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver.  This will help avoid having to skip the surgery due to the liver being too large.  Its kind of a small chance that can happen in the first place so I have seen many doctors not do it.  Mine does a 10 day...I am on day 5.  Surviving :)  At least its a good head start.  I think it might also help combat that urge to have too much food right before your surgery...which is what I would be doing if not for the liquid diet

I don't have a pre-op diet either. I just have to do liquids 24 hours before surgery and I have to weigh less..

I don't have one either.  Just 2 days liquid before the surgery along with the wonderful bowel prep the night before.

The only diet that my surgeon requires is a 2 week low carb diet (40 carbs a day).  I am not required to do liquids only.

I don't have a pre-op diet either. I was just told to eat light on the day before.

My surgeon put us on the Aktins Diet for two weeks prior to surgery.  His reason for this was that the Atkins Diet (high protein - low/no carbs) helps to shrink the liver which makes it easier to work around during surgery.

I too noticed that so many people talk about being put on a liquid diet for a week or two prior to surgery. And then for another few weeks after the surgery. I see so many posts in which people are struggling with it and I feel so bad for them.

I'm 2 weeks post op and I'm already eating high protein regular foods, just making sure that if I eat any sort of meats, I chop them up really small.  I found that the regular foods made my stomach feel better then the liquids. The protein shakes seemed to create a lot of air in my stomach made me real burpy. My surgeon didn't insist that we stay with the liquids for a per determined amount of time. He said to just take it slow introducing the real foods and to make sure that you stick with good high protein foods and chop up any meats real good (and eat REAL SLOW).

Good luck to you with your upcoming surgery. Hope all goes well !!

I am glad there are others.  My 2 week pre-op is a modified liquid diet with three shakes and 2 small meals of protien and veggies per day.  Did you ask your surgeon about the pros and cons of the total liquid 2 week pre-op?  My surgery is scheduled for 2/23.  I am so excited I think I could even handle the liquid pre-op if need be.

Best of luck with your surgery.
