I have been experiencing pain on the left side, but that is considered normal since that's where they do most of the work. Not sure what kind of pain you could be having in the center of your chest. I would call and talk to your surgeon's nurse about the pain you are having. I am sorry your dr didn't take it more seriously. By day 10 it should be tapering off not getting worse. Sandi 2/21/08

I only experienced severe back pain, when i went to the doctor he said that it could probably be the drain. He took the drain out and the back pain was there for about 2 more days and then it was gone. Hope you feel better. You should call your doctor. God bless you, Miriam

I had mine one day before you and have lost 18. I too have slowed down. I am eating 3 oz of chicken or fish at a meal. Protein shake gives me 35 grams of protein. Scambled egg with no milk. Oatmeal. I have to say I don't feel great...not bad...just off still.

Man thanks so much...I'm 7 days post op and just walked through the grocery store to get flavored water....I looked at all those goodies and started to feel like I'd doomed myself to a tasteless life of deprivation and suffering (my mind goes melodramatic in under 30)...anyway your protein ideas are really helpful and a med cup of flavor with some hidden powder beats endless gaggy shakes....what vitamins do you recommend? It is so helpful to know others in this city are going through the same kinds of feelings and life changes...I haven't made a group yet and am anxious to meet my sisters(and brothers) Thanks again MOC colorado springs

Also watch your salt intake. Low sodium foods is good for reducing swelling. Good luck!

Hi All - I had lap RNY surgery on Feb 25th. Doc said everything went ok. Was discharged from hospital 2 days later & in minor pain, but nothing that I could pinpoint. Given prescription for vicadin for pain, but did not use at first cuz the pain was tolerable. On day 6 I started getting a shooting pain under my chest everytime I walked around (Im fine sitting & laying) - exactly where the incinsion was for the untensils. I started taking the vicadin every 4 hrs. It didnt seem to do anything. On day 8 I got nervous when that one shooting pain became non-stop whenever I started to walk around & called the doc. He told me to tighten my binder & use a warm compress since I was seeing him the next day for a checkup. On day 9 (yesterday), the doc removed all the bandages, said I'm healing perfectly & when I complained of the pain - he gave me a steriod shot right above that incision. Said I might not be drinking enough water, which I prob wasnt, and that a blot clot might have been forming. Said I should be w/o any pain by that evening. WRONG! the pain is the same as yesterday - I cant even walk around my living room more then 3 minutes w/o sitting down. Has anyone else experienced this? Am I expecting too much too soon? I will admit I am one of those with a pretty low tolerance to pain. -Michelle PS - I also posted this on the main board & then realized that you guys might be experiencing this more like me

It's not forever. You have to remember that you will still be eating food - eventually. In fact, with the band you will have VERY few restrictions, which may be the biggest challenge you have. The only restriction you will have is in amount. If you focus on quantity, rather than quality you may not get the results you want from the band. There are ways to "get around" the surgery or sabotage yourself if you focus on foods you can eat in quantity - "slider" foods that just go right through **** cream, mashed potatoes, etc...) will still add pounds because you may be able to have those in large amounts. Make sure to seek out support & psych services if they are remotely available to you. I had my own issues. I was supposed to be on a monitored diet last yr to get insurance approval and I just wasn't there in my head. I just didn't have it in me. I lost about 5 pounds during the 6 month required diet but once I was approved for surgery I was ready. My last week of regular food I made sure to have my favorites, but it was a surprisingly small list. With RNY there really may be things I can never have again, but with band that isn't the case. I didn't go out of my way to eat everything and I feel really good about where I am (8 days post-op). I actualy lost more the wk before surgery than I did during the 6 month diet (note: I didn't have liquid diet until day before surgery). I'm not saying mine is the only way by any means, but look at the revision board & all the "WLS didn't work for me" topics - THEY ARE ALL OVER - and make sure you are READY Good Luck to you I wish you the best & hope things go well

I am only 1 week out, but according to my surgeon's program I shoud be up to 2 - 4 Tablespoons per meal from week 3 - Month 3. Should be 3 meals a day and then a couple of 1 - 2 Tablespoon snacks. NO protein supplements. Min. 20 minutes per meal. I haven't clarified with them but on paper they don't stress reaching protein goals until after 3 months. Just that what you do eat is focused on protein first and low fat low sugar. Yep that pretty much sums it up. Obviously I'm not where you are so I'm not saying I will be perfect but really trying to follow their guidelines because they have great results in both weight loss & health benefits long term. 4,000 plus surgeries to the programs credit. You're where my mom, 7 yrs out, says it is the hardest energy-wise etc... This is the point where your body is catching up with what you're doing to it. My understanding is, if you keep it up, the weight will come off again. Just a stall. Good Luck, Diana

My surgeon's practice doesn't recommend ANY protein supplements. They urge patients to get protein from food. In early stages they have found that the body burns protein the same way it does any other calorie and there's no benefit to supplements. Their practice has done over 4,000 surgeries and they have amazing results so I don't argue. At 3 weeks out this should be possible - the list of good sources I have for that stage include: soft tofu soybeans/Edamame beans (all types - chili, kidney, black, pinto, navy_ Seeds & nuts (VERY WELL CHEWED) eggs, scrambled, soft boiled, egg salad LF string cheese LF ricotta cheese fish (steamed or poached) finely ground beef, chicken, veal or turkey (moistened well) blended chicken, tuna, canned seafood salad, crab baby shrimp, seafood, shrimp ****tail I know all programs are different but if the supplements aren't working for you there are other options. Good Luck, DJ

Good Morning, I had my surgery on February 13, 2008 and have lost 22 pounds, which is great however it seems to have slowed down as I thought it would. Just wondering what everyone else who had surgery around the same time is eating now? I spoke with my NUT this morning and found out a few things I am doing wrong. (Weight Control Oatmeal, no cheese ) What portions are you eating and how is your weight loss going? Thank yoU!
